1. Definition & Core Properties

Alloy steel pipe is a special steel pipe manufactured by adding alloy elements including chromium, molybdenum, nickel, vanadium and tungsten into carbon steel base. Customized alloy composition greatly improves its performance of high temperature resistance, high pressure resistance, creep resistance, low temperature toughness and corrosion resistance. Its comprehensive performance far outperforms ordinary carbon steel pipes, widely adopted in harsh industrial environments with high temperature, high pressure and strong corrosive media.

2. Two Main Production Processes

2.1 Seamless Alloy Steel Pipe (Mainstream for Pressure-bearing Projects)

Integrally formed by hot rolling, cold rolling or cold drawing without welding seams, eliminating weak points at weld joints. It owns top performance on high temperature and pressure resistance, mandatory for power station boilers and petrochemical high-pressure pipelines.

  • Hot rolling: Round billet heating → piercing → pipe rolling → sizing & cooling, suitable for large-diameter thick-wall pipes

  • Cold drawing / cold rolling: Pickling, precision rolling & annealing, high dimensional accuracy and smooth surface, ideal for thin-wall precision tubes

2.2 Welded Alloy Steel Pipe

Formed by high-frequency welding or submerged arc welding of alloy steel plate/strip. Lower cost than seamless pipes, only applicable for medium-low pressure & normal temperature working conditions. Forbidden for core pipelines of power station main steam and high-pressure boilers.

3. Classification by Total Alloy Content

  1. Low-alloy Pipe (Total alloy elements ≤5%)Grades: 16Mn(Q345B), 42CrMo, 15CrMo. Balanced cost & performance, applied in oil & gas transportation, mechanical structures and medium-temperature heat exchangers.

  2. Medium-alloy Pipe (Total alloy elements: 5%–10%)Cr-Mo heat-resistant steel: 12Cr1MoV, P22, 10Cr9Mo. For boilers operating at 550–580℃ and refinery furnace pipelines.

  3. High-alloy Pipe (Total alloy elements ≥10%)P91/P92, 304/316 stainless steel, Hastelloy alloy, nickel-based alloy. Resist ultra-supercritical temperature above 600℃, strong acid, alkali and seawater corrosion; used in nuclear power, fine chemical and aerospace industries.

4. Common Grades & Matching Service Conditions

Chinese National Standard Grades

  1. 15CrMoG: Medium & high-pressure boilers below 540℃, petrochemical cracking tubes

  2. 12Cr1MoVG: Superheaters & main steam pipelines of subcritical power plants, long-term service at 570℃

  3. 42CrMo: Mechanical structures, hydraulic high-pressure cylinders, engineering machinery sleeves

  4. 16Mn(Q345): Oil & gas transmission, steel structure supports, low-temperature pipelines

International ASTM Grades (Widely Used in Foreign Trade)

  1. P11/P22 (T11/T22): High-temperature steam pipelines for conventional power plants

  2. P91 (T91): Supercritical power units, maximum service temperature 620℃

8. Key Acceptance Points for Procurement

  1. Material certificate: Verify heat number, mechanical property and alloy composition test reports

  2. Non-destructive testing: 100% ultrasonic & eddy current inspection for high-pressure seamless pipes to eliminate cracks and lamination defects

  3. Dimensional tolerance: Strict controllable OD & wall thickness tolerance for cold-drawn precision tubes

  4. Working condition matching: Grade G boiler-dedicated alloy pipes must be adopted for high-temperature boilers; ordinary structural pipes are not allowed for replacement
