IEC/EN 62471 Blue Light Hazard Test Standard for LED Lamps
This standard evaluates the optical radiation hazards associated with various lamps and lighting systems and completely replaces the energy rating requirements for LED products in EN 60825. It adds photobiological requirements, including radiant intensity and brightness, and assigns hazard classifications based on test data, including exemption, low hazard, medium hazard, and high hazard levels.
The EU portion of the standard, EN 62471:2008, came into effect on September 1, 2009, while the LED portion of EN 60825 will become fully obsolete on September 1, 2010. All lamps sold in the European market are now required to meet photobiological safety requirements. North America is also studying the integration of photobiological safety regulations into existing standards. In China, when applying for CQC or CCC certification for LED lamps, manufacturers are required to provide a photobiological hazard classification statement or test report.
