Introduction:
Cerium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet crystals, abbreviated as Ce:YAG crystals, have the chemical
formula Ce:Y₃Al₅O₁₂. They are an exceptional scintillation crystal material capable of producing large-sized
crystal ingots with diameters reaching 4 inches. Currently, they are widely used in commercial applications.
Ce:YAG crystals exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yield, fast decay times (60-70 ns), excellent
high-temperature stability, consistent physical and chemical properties, and superior machinability. Their
emission peak at 520-550 nm aligns with the detection sensitivity range of commercial silicon photodiodes,
enabling applications in detecting low-to-medium energy gamma rays and alpha particles, as well as in X-ray
and electron imaging.
Ce:YAG crystals exhibit a broad absorption band and strong absorption at the 460nm wavelength.
Consequently, they effectively absorb blue light emitted by InGaN blue light chips and re-emit a broad
yellow-green light spectrum spanning 520-560nm. This superimposed emission produces white light,
enabling their use in fabricating high-brightness white light LEDs.Due to its excellent machinability and
high-temperature stability, researchers have explored micro-etching different hierarchical structures of
the crystal material for developing white light lasers.
