Applications

The Model 1153 digital conductivity meter can measure the conductivity of fluids in conductivity units (CU), which is defined as picoseconds per meter, complying with ASTM D 2624 standards. The Model 1153 conductivity meter features a robust electromechanical design, making it suitable for both laboratory and field applications. This instrument was initially designed and developed for safety reasons to measure the conductivity of hydrocarbon fuels (especially aviation kerosene). Additionally, multiple preamplifier versions are available to measure various fluids, meeting a wide range of application requirements.

Safety

Hydrocarbon fuels typically have low conductivity, making them prone to generating static charges. Static charges are more likely to be generated when the fuel is pumped through a filter at high speed. Due to the relatively low conductivity, static charges are not easily dissipated and can persist for a long time. This situation may lead to explosions and/or fires. Since conductivity is related to temperature, it is crucial to record the fuel temperature during measurement.

Process Control

In addition to safety considerations, monitoring the conductivity of fluids can also be used for process control. At different stages of production, the addition and mixing of various components can be monitored to ensure they are correct. These applications are not limited to hydrocarbons but also extend to other products, such as paints, solvents, inks, and other non-organic substances.

Working Principle

The EMCEE Model 1153 conductivity meter consists of an electronic component and an aluminum probe. This probe is similar to a capacitor with concentric electrodes and is immersed in the liquid until it reaches a set of holes near the electronic component. During the reverse cycle, a relatively small direct current flows through the liquid between the electrodes. The current is amplified in the electronic component and displayed on the liquid crystal display in units of picoSiemens per meter (pS/m). This data is then stored in non-volatile memory until the next reading.
