1. Overview
Net total radiation is the difference between the total broadband radiation incident downward from the sky (including the sun and atmosphere) and the total broadband radiation emitted upward from the surface (including soil, vegetation, and water bodies).
The TBB-2 Series Net Total Radiometer is a market-leading 4-component net radiation sensor. It employs two upward-facing and two downward-facing radiation sensors, enabling simultaneous measurement of multiple radiation parameters: solar shortwave radiation, longwave radiation, reflected shortwave radiation, reflected longwave radiation, shortwave reflectance, longwave reflectance, and net total radiation.
It is widely recognized for its high measurement accuracy, modular design, passive operation, and excellent cost-effectiveness. Primarily used for scientific-grade energy balance and surface flux research, it is an ideal instrument for research applications. It is also extensively applied in meteorology, photovoltaics, horticulture, agriculture, industry, and other fields.
II. Basic Principle
The TBB-2 Series Net Total Radiometer consists of two shortwave radiometers and two longwave radiometers.The shortwave radiometer comprises components such as a quartz dome, sensing element, and sensor body.The longwave radiometer comprises a silicon arched filter dome, sensing element, platinum resistance thermometer, sensor body, and other components.
The sensing element is a multi-junction wire-wound electroplated thermopile. Its sensing surface is coated with an imported high-absorptivity matte black coating.The black coating absorbs radiant energy, creating a temperature difference across the thermopile, which generates a thermoelectric output (thermo-EMF) proportional to the incident radiation intensity.Inside the cavity of each longwave radiometer, a platinum resistance is embedded at the cold junction of the thermopile for temperature compensation.
Each individual radiometer has its own sensitivity coefficient and output cable, enabling independent data output.By combining these individual outputs, the instrument can measure:shortwave radiation, reflected shortwave radiation, longwave radiation, reflected longwave radiation, total broadband radiation, net total radiation, shortwave reflectance, and longwave reflectance.
A positive net total radiation indicates that the surface is gaining heat (i.e., incoming radiation exceeds outgoing radiation), while a negative net total radiation indicates that the surface is losing heat.
