Product Description
Saudi Arabia's new energy efficiency standard, SASO 2902:2018/AMD2:2023, will be mandatory on June 1, 2025.
The Saudi Arabian Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) has mandated that the new standard for lighting products, SASO 2902:2018/AMD2:2023, will take effect on March 31, 2025. Enforcement at customs ports and factories will begin on June 1, 2025, and for products sold and stored in the local market on June 1, 2026. Energy efficiency labeling changes and upgrades for newly added compliant and exempted products will close on May 31, 2025. SASO will then cancel all energy efficiency certificates and labels (including exemption certificates) that do not comply with the new standard, and IECEE certification will also be suspended.
The specific requirements are as follows:
There are three scenarios for upgrading energy efficiency labels:
First: For products not exempted from the new standard, the original exemption certificate application should be changed to a normal application, such as linear LED strip luminaires.
Second: For products still exempted from the new standard, a new exemption certificate application should be submitted.
Third: For products with existing energy efficiency certificates and labels that are now exempted from the new standard, the original energy efficiency certificate and label application should be changed to an exemption certificate application, such as wall luminaires.
The new version of the standard SASO 2902:2018/AMD2:2023 includes the following updates:
Update 1: Product Scope
Requirements for toxic and hazardous substances have been removed from the product scope list.
Update 2: Terms and Definitions
Detailed definitions for scalable LED modules and pendant luminaires have been added.
Scalable LED module: An LED module designed according to a certain design rule and expressed by characteristics proportional to a specific geometrical dimension.
Pendant luminaire: A luminaire provided with a cord, chain, tube, etc., which permits it to be suspended from a ceiling or wall support.
Update 3: New Clauses Added
Testing and claiming requirements for linear scalable LED modules, such as LED strips, have been added.
• Rated power and rated luminous flux must be claimed based on 1 meter (including products less than 1 meter in length).
• Testing must be performed using a 50cm product, and the length of the tested product must be reflected in the report.
Update 4: New Exemptions Added
Exempt products not intended for lighting purposes have been added.
• RGB or RGB/W luminaires
• Floor lamps, table lamps, and wall lamps
• All pendant lamps are exempt (except linear pendants, panel pendants, and suspended high bay lights)
Update 5: Added exemptions for technical reasons
• Products that cannot be tested due to the following reasons
— Net weight exceeding 50 kg
— Length or shortest cut length exceeding 2 meters
• Luminaires with a beam angle less than 10°
• Luminaires with an IP rating of 65 or higher (excluding floodlights and streetlights)
Update 6: Product Packaging
The following information has been added to product packaging:
• IP rating (if IP rating is 65 or higher)
• For scalable linear LED modules, rated power, rated luminous flux, and rated luminous efficacy must be declared based on a distance of 1 meter
Update 7: Deleted requirements for toxic chemicals
Deleted the toxic chemical parameter requirements for lamps and controllers in Appendix J
