IPX4, IPX5 and IPX6 are the International Protection Class (IP Code) test standards for water resistance of equipment, which are mainly used to evaluate the protection of products against water impacts of different intensities. The following is a detailed description of these ratings for rain and spray resistant test chambers:
1. IPX4 (splash water resistant)
Test Requirements:
Water splashes onto the equipment from all directions without harmful effects.
Test Chamber Design:
A pendulum or nozzle system is used to simulate splashing water from multiple directions.
The angle of the pendulum is usually 180° or 360°, and the number of nozzles is large and evenly distributed.
Water flow rate: approx. 10 L/min, test time is usually 10 minutes.
2. IPX5 (water spray protection)
Test Requirements:
A jet of water (12.5 L/min, 30 kPa) from a nozzle (6.3 mm) directly impacts the equipment for at least 3 minutes.
Test Chamber Design:
Fixed or adjustable nozzle, water pressure and flow rate need to be precisely controlled.
Testing distance: 2.5-3 meters from the nozzle to the sample.
Usually equipped with a high pressure water pump and flow meter.
3. IPX6 (protection against strong water jets)
Testing requirements:
A strong jet of water (100 L/min, 100 kPa) from a larger diameter nozzle (12.5 mm) for at least 3 minutes.
Test Chamber Design:
High-pressure water pump system to ensure water pressure and flow rate meets standards.
Nozzles need to be resistant to high pressure and the test distance is usually 2.5-3 meters.
Higher capacity tanks and drainage systems may be required.
