I. IPX3 Test Standards and Luminaire Requirements
1. IPX3 test definition
-IPX3 Test Definition
Test Purpose: To verify the waterproof performance of the luminaire when exposed to water within a range of 60° vertically (simulating a moderate rain environment).
-
Test conditions:
◦
Water flow rate: 10 L/min ±5%.
◦
Spray time: at least 5 minutes (IEC 60529 standard).
◦
Spray angle: pendulum covering vertical direction ±30° (total 60° range).
2. Lamp industry applications
-
Outdoor luminaires: street lights and garden lights need to be IPX3/IPX4 certified to prevent short circuits caused by rainwater infiltration.
-
Vehicle lights: headlights and taillights need to meet IPX3 to cope with rainy day driving scenarios.

Second, the lamp with rain test chamber design features
1. Core configuration
Module
Technical requirements
Pendulum tube system
- Pendulum radius: 200-1600mm (according to the size of the lamp).
- Pendulum angle: 60° (IPX3 standard), extendable to 180° (compatible with IPX4 testing).
Spraying device
- Nozzle aperture: 0.4mm, spray hole spacing ≤ 50mm, to ensure uniform shower.
- Water flow rate: 10 L/min ±5%, calibrated by flow meter.
Sample stage
- Can be rotated or fixed installation, load-bearing ≥ 50kg (suitable for large street lamps).
- Motorized lifting function (to adjust the height of lamps).
Box structure
- 304 stainless steel liner, corrosion resistant.
- Transparent tempered glass observation window + LED lighting, real-time monitoring of the test process.
Control system
- Touch screen operation, preset IPX3 standard program.
- Real-time display of flow rate, time, pendulum speed.
2. Lamp testing adaptive design
-Sealing protection
Sealed protection: When the lamps are energized for testing, the power supply interface should be waterproofed (e.g. through the board connector into the box).
-
Mounting fixture: customized bracket to adapt to different shapes of lamps (e.g. round street lamps, long strip lamps).
III. Testing process (take outdoor street light as an example)
1.
Sample preparation:
◦
Clean the surface of the luminaire, make sure the sealing ring is intact, install it to the sample table and energize it.
2.
Parameter Setup:
◦
Select IPX3 mode, set the flow rate to 10 L/min, time to 5 minutes, and swing tube angle to 60°.
3.
Start the test:
◦
The pendulum tube swings at a constant speed, covering a range of ±30° in the vertical direction of the fixture.
4.
Result evaluation:
◦
Immediately after the test, the power was disconnected and the luminaire was disassembled to check for internal water seepage.
◦
Verify the insulation of the circuit boards and terminals (e.g., testing with a megohmmeter).
IV. Selection of key parameters
Parameter
Description
Pendulum radius
Selected according to the size of the lamps and lanterns (e.g. the height of the street lamp is 1.5m, the radius of the pendulum is ≥800mm).
Flow rate accuracy
Flow meter error ≤ ±5%, regular calibration (using standard measuring cup verification).
Extended Function
Optional IPX4 (360° pendulum) or IPX5 (high-pressure nozzle) module, future upgrades to the test requirements.
Safety Protection
Leakage protection, water shortage alarm, emergency stop button, to ensure the safety of charged test.
V. Precautions
-
Electrically charged test safety:
◦
Make sure the box is grounded when the lamp is energized to avoid the risk of leakage.
◦
Use waterproof connectors to access the power supply to prevent water from splashing into the electronic control system.
-
Sample fixation:
◦
Large fixtures require a reinforced base to prevent tipping during testing.
-
Water quality requirements:
◦
Use purified or deionized water to avoid scale clogging the nozzle or contaminating the fixture surface.
