1. Product Overview

The TBB-1 Net Radiation Sensor is a high-precision instrument designed for measuring the net radiation balance between the Earth’s surface and the atmosphere. Net radiation represents the thermal equilibrium of plant canopies and is the fundamental basis for evapotranspiration and photosynthesis. It is defined as the difference between incoming and outgoing solar and terrestrial radiation.


The sensor mainly measures:

  • Shortwave radiation (0.27–3 µm) from the sun

  • Longwave terrestrial radiation (3–50 µm) emitted by the Earth’s surface


The TBB-1 is a professional-grade instrument specifically designed for accurate net radiation measurement and is widely used in meteorology, agriculture, hydrology, environmental science, and architectural research.


2. Working Principle

The TBB-1 Net Radiation Sensor operates based on the thermoelectric effect.

  • The sensing element consists of two thermopiles made of copper wire.

  • Each thermopile has two black-coated absorbing surfaces—one facing upward and one facing downward.

  • The upper surface absorbs incoming solar radiation, while the lower surface absorbs terrestrial radiation from the ground.

  • Due to the different radiation intensities absorbed by the two surfaces, a temperature difference is generated, producing a proportional electrical signal output.

  • A positive value indicates net heat gain by the surface, while a negative value represents net heat loss.

This design ensures accurate measurement of net radiation and is suitable for long-term outdoor monitoring.
