Overview of Centrifugal Spray Dryer:

      The centrifugal spray dryer is a core equipment in modern industry for efficiently converting liquid materials into high-quality powders. Its working principle is that through a high-speed rotating centrifugal atomizer, the liquid raw material is instantly scattered and stretched to form a fine mist net. Meanwhile, hot air is precisely introduced into the drying tower and comes into efficient contact with the mist droplets in a co-current or counter-current flow, enabling the water to evaporate rapidly within a few seconds, and finally obtaining a uniform and dry powder product.

      The essence of this process lies in "instantaneous drying". The extremely high heat and mass transfer efficiency allows even heat-sensitive substances (such as proteins, probiotics, or natural extracts) to be dehydrated at a relatively low temperature, thus maximally retaining their active ingredients and natural properties. By precisely controlling the atomizer speed, inlet air temperature, and air flow mode, operators can flexibly control the particle size, moisture content, solubility, and fluidity of the finished powder to meet the strict requirements of many fields, from food milk powder, pharmaceutical raw materials to high-end ceramic powders and nanomaterials.

      Therefore, the centrifugal spray dryer is not only a drying technology but also a precise powder manufacturing system. Application of spray dryer in graphene production:

      The spray dryer is a crucial post-processing and material engineering tool in the production process of graphene and its composites. It is mainly used to process liquid-dispersed graphene (such as graphene oxide GO, reduced graphene oxide rGO) or its composite slurries and convert them into functional powders that are convenient for storage, transportation, and application.

     

      The spray dryer is mainly applied in the following directions in graphene production:

  1. Preparation of macroscopic graphene powder

  • Process: Spray dry the stably dispersed aqueous solution of graphene oxide (GO) or the dispersion of reduced graphene oxide (rGO).

  • Result: During the instant drying process of droplets, due to the evaporation of water and the capillary force and π-π interaction between graphene sheets, the graphene sheets will self-assemble, wrinkle, and stack to form porous and fluffy spherical microspheres or hollow spheres. This kind of powder is called "graphene microspheres" or "three-dimensional graphene architecture precursor".

  • Value: It avoids the serious irreversible agglomeration and densification caused by traditional freeze-drying or oven drying, and retains a high specific surface area and rich pore structure, which is beneficial for direct application in fields such as energy storage (e.g., supercapacitors, battery electrodes), adsorption, and catalysis.

  • Preparation of graphene-based composite material powder

    • Graphene/metal oxide composites: Mixed with materials such as MnO₂, TiO₂, SnO₂, Fe₃O₄, etc., for use in supercapacitors or lithium batteries.

    • Graphene/conductive polymer composites: Mixed with materials such as PANI, PPy, etc., for use in flexible electrodes.

    • Graphene/silicon/carbon composites: Used for silicon-based anodes in lithium batteries.

    • This is the most important and valuable application. After uniformly mixing graphene (GO or rGO) with other active nanomaterials in the liquid phase, they are spray-dried together.

    • Common composite systems:

    • Key role: Spray drying can "anchor" or "encapsulate" the active substance nanoparticles in the wrinkled graphene sheet network, forming a stable "encapsulated" or "sandwich" structure. This can effectively prevent the agglomeration of active particles, buffer their volume expansion (e.g., silicon anodes), and fully utilize the high conductivity and mechanical strength of graphene to construct a three-dimensional conductive network.

  • Commercial processing of graphene slurry

    • For commercially available graphene conductive slurries (usually water-based or solvent-based), spray drying is an effective method to convert them into standardized and easy-to-use solid conductive additive powders, which is convenient for downstream customers (e.g., the plastics, rubber, and coating industries) to conduct dry mixing.




    Unique advantages of spray dryers in graphene production:

    1. “Granulation” rather than simple “drying”: Its core value lies in constructing a three-dimensional microstructure from two-dimensional graphene sheets through the atomization-drying process. During the evaporation of droplets, the solute (graphene sheets) is confined to the surface of the shrinking droplets, ultimately forming solid particles with a specific morphology.

    2. “One-step method” to achieve uniform compounding and structure construction: Integrate multiple steps such as mixing, drying, forming, and compounding into one step. It can achieve uniform compounding of graphene and other components at the nanoscale, which cannot be achieved by mechanical dry mixing.

    3. Prevent irreversible agglomeration: Compared with slow oven drying, instantaneous drying can reduce the close stacking of graphene sheets caused by the van der Waals force during long-term contact, and better maintain its inherent properties.

    1. Food industry

    • Production of milk powder, soy milk powder, coffee powder, fruit juice powder, egg powder, yeast, and fruit and vegetable powder.

    • Drying of seasonings (such as soy sauce powder, yeast extract) and food additives (flavors, pigments).

    • Low-temperature drying of functional foods (probiotics, enzyme preparations) to protect active ingredients.

  • Pharmaceutical industry

    • Drying of raw materials such as antibiotics, vitamins, and traditional Chinese medicine extracts.

    • Preparation of spray-dried microcapsules for drug slow release or taste masking (such as granules, capsule fillers).

  • Chemical engineering and materials
