1. Product Overview

Shipbuilding steel plate, also known as hull steel plate, is the core raw material for constructing hulls, decks, cabins, ship sides, bilges and ship superstructures as well as supporting marine steel structures. It is applied to various vessels including ocean-going cargo ships, container ships, bulk carriers, oil tankers, engineering ships, fishing boats, yachts and auxiliary hulls of offshore platforms. Featuring excellent seawater corrosion resistance, low-temperature impact toughness, high strength and favorable welding & cold working performance, the product is produced in strict compliance with standards of various classification societies, meeting the service requirements of inland, coastal and transoceanic vessels under harsh marine operating conditions.

2. Applicable Standards & Classification Society Certifications

2.1 Mainstream International Standards

  • Chinese Standard: GB 712-2011 Steel for Hull Structure

  • Global Authoritative Certifications: ABS (USA), BV (France), CCS (China Classification Society), DNV (Norway), LR (UK), GL (Germany), NK (Japan), KR (South Korea)

2.2 Classification of Material Grades (Classified by Impact Toughness and Strength)

(1) Normal Strength Ship Plate (Grade A, B, D, E)

  • Grade A Ship Plate: Room-temperature impact resistance, used for decks and superstructures of small inland and coastal vessels

  • Grade B Ship Plate: 0℃ impact toughness, general base material for hull shells of ordinary cargo ships

  • Grade D Ship Plate: Low-temperature impact resistance at -20℃, applied to main hull structures such as side plates and cabins of ocean-going ships

  • Grade E Ship Plate: Ultra-low temperature impact resistance at -40℃, used for key stressed components of polar ships, refrigerated vessels and icebreakers

(2) High-Strength Ship Plate (AH32, DH32, EH32, AH36, DH36, EH36, AH40, DH40, EH40)

The figures stand for yield strength (32/36/40kg/mm²), while the letters represent corresponding impact temperatures:

  • AH: Impact test at 0℃; DH: Impact test at -20℃; EH: Impact test at -40℃Widely adopted for heavy-load stressed areas including bilges, main decks and keels of large container ships, oil tankers and bulk carriers.

(3) Extra High-Strength Ship Plate

FH36, FH40 (Impact resistance at -60℃ for extreme cold), specially used for polar transport ships and icebreakers.

3. Core Specification Parameters

  1. Thickness: 6mm–100mm (regular stock thickness: 6–50mm; customized heavy plate rolling: 50–100mm)

  2. Width: 1500mm, 1800mm, 2000mm, 2200mm, 2500mm

  3. Length: 6000mm/8000mm/10000mm/12000mm; fixed-size cutting and small-size cutting are available

  4. Delivery Condition: TMCP thermomechanical control rolling, normalized, tempered, hot rolled (matched with corresponding processes according to material grades)

  5. Surface Treatment: Original hot-rolled black surface, shot blasting rust removal, pre-coated marine special epoxy zinc-rich anti-rust primer

4. Core Product Performance Advantages

  1. Outstanding Low-Temperature Impact ToughnessSeries D/E/F ship plates avoid brittle fracture under ultra-low temperature in ocean and polar sea areas, eliminating the risk of hull cracking caused by low-temperature stress.

  2. Strong Resistance to Marine Medium CorrosionThe steel strictly controls harmful impurities sulfur and phosphorus, with micro-alloy matching of copper, nickel and chromium, resisting seawater salt spray and moisture corrosion to extend vessel service life.

  3. Excellent WeldabilityLow carbon equivalent, compatible with mainstream marine welding processes such as manual arc welding, submerged arc welding and gas shielded welding. Weld seams are free of cracks and pores with stable forming, complying with high-strength hull welding standards.

  4. Stable Tensile and Yield StrengthUniform mechanical properties of the steel resist deformation caused by ocean wave impact, hull load bearing and cargo extrusion, preventing distortion of key parts like keels and bilges.

  5. Good Adaptability to Hot and Cold ProcessingIt can be bent, rolled, cut and stamped to adapt to curved hull forming; no edge hardening occurs after flame cutting and plasma cutting.

  6. Qualified Ship Inspection Quality AssuranceEach batch of steel plates is attached with original mill test certificates and classification society certificates with complete chemical composition and mechanical property test reports, directly passing shipyard inspection and maritime authority audit.

5. Main Application Positions

  1. Main Hull: Bilge plates, side shell plates, bottom decks, keels, frames and cross beams

  2. Cabin Structures: Cargo hold bulkheads, compartment bulkheads, watertight door frames

  3. Superstructures: Wheelhouses, crew cabins, walkway decks, guardrail bases

  4. Special Vessels: Oil storage bulkheads of oil tankers, base plates of refrigerated ships, outer shells of icebreakers, hulls of fishing boats

  5. Offshore Supporting Facilities: Pontoons, floating cranes, offshore floating platforms and port floating box steel structures

6. Supporting Supply Services

  1. Customized Materials: Full series ship plates of Grade A/B/D/E/AH36/DH36/EH36 with complete classification society certificates can be customized on demand

  2. Processing Services: CNC cutting, bending, plate rolling, beveling, shot blasting and painting

  3. Packaging & Transportation: Waterproof and moisture-proof packaging, direct shipment from Tianjin Port with a lead time of 5–7 days

  4. Document Support: Provide original mill test certificates, classification society certificates, commodity inspection documents and customs clearance materials for export foreign trade

  5. Flexible Sizes: Standard fixed lengths, non-standard small-size cutting, customized rolling of extra-wide and extra-thick plates

7. Storage and Operation Precautions

  1. The storage site shall be rainproof and moisture-proof, with plates placed on supports off the ground to avoid rust caused by long-term contact with seawater and soil.

  2. Remove oxide scale and rust on plate surfaces before cutting and welding to ensure welding quality.

  3. Prioritize Grade D/E low-temperature ship plates for construction under low-temperature environments; Grade A plates shall not be used for main stressed structures of polar and refrigerated vessels.

  4. Multi-layer coating of marine special anti-corrosion paint is recommended for long-term outdoor service to improve anti-corrosion durability.
