Underground Mine Dewatering Pump Station Level and Flow Integration System
Underground mines must continuously remove groundwater that seeps into the workings. Dewatering pump stations are located at the bottom of shafts or declines, collecting water in a sump and pumping it to the surface. Managing the water level in each sump is critical: if the level gets too high, water can flood the mine workings, endangering personnel and equipment; if the level gets too low, pumps run dry and can be damaged. Furthermore, the flow rate pumped from each station indicates the overall inflow to the mine, which is a key safety metric. The MineDewatering Level & Flow Manager uses submersible pressure transducers for level measurement and magnetic flow meters on pump discharge lines, integrated with the mine's automation system to control pumps in a lead lag sequence, optimize energy use, and provide real time flow data to the control center. The system issues emergency alerts if the water level rises faster than the pump capacity, allowing evacuation before flooding.
Underground Mine Safety Technology:
Submersible Pressure Transducer with Lightning Protection: The sump environment is wet, dirty, and subject to electrical noise from mining equipment. The level sensor is a submersible pressure transmitter with a ceramic or titanium diaphragm, rated for 10 times overpressure. It includes integral lightning protection and a shielded cable to prevent damage from stray currents. Accuracy is ±5 millimeters.
Lead Lag Pump Control with Alternation: The pump station typically has two or three pumps (duty, assist, standby). The system starts the lead pump when the level reaches a start setpoint. If the level continues to rise (inflow exceeds one pump capacity), it starts the lag pump. It alternates which pump serves as lead each cycle to equalize wear. The system also staggers start times to avoid power spikes.
Flow Measurement for Inflow Trend Analysis: A magnetic flow meter is installed on the common discharge header (or on each pump). The total flow rate is transmitted to the surface control center. By comparing flow rate to the sump level rate of change, the system calculates the net inflow (groundwater seepage rate). An increase in inflow over time may indicate a burst water main or increasing fracture flow, triggering a geological review.
Remote Control and Emergency Override: The surface dispatcher can view each pump station's level, pump status, and flow rate. In an emergency, the dispatcher can remotely start or stop pumps and even adjust level setpoints. The system also includes a local hardwired emergency stop at each pump station.
Mine Dewatering Operation Workflow:
Sump Geometry and Setpoint Configuration: Engineers enter the sump dimensions (cylindrical or rectangular) and setpoints for pump start, lead lag, high high alarm, and low low alarm (pump protection).
Automatic Pump Control with Inflow Monitoring: The system runs autonomously. Operators at the surface control center see the live level and flow trends. If the level approaches the high high alarm, an audible alarm sounds on the surface and underground, and the dispatcher may order evacuation.
Predictive Maintenance from Pump Run Data: The system tracks pump run time per day and number of starts. If a pump's run time increases significantly while level remains constant, it indicates pump wear or clogging. The system generates a maintenance work order.
