Electrical utilities and telecommunications companies have thousands of underground vaults and manholes containing transformers, switches, and fiber optic splice cases. These vaults are prone to flooding from stormwater, groundwater seepage, or broken water mains. Floodwater can cause short circuits, power outages, and corrosion of expensive equipment. The Vault Flood Guardian uses a non contact ultrasonic or submersible pressure level sensor installed in the vault to monitor water level. When water rises to a preset level (e.g., 15 centimeters from the floor), the system activates a submersible sump pump to remove water. It also sends alerts via cellular to the utility control center, including GPS location and current water level. If the water level reaches a critical high (e.g., within 5 centimeters of live electrical equipment), the system can remotely trip upstream breakers to de energize the vault, preventing electrocution hazards for field crews. This system reduces emergency response times, prevents equipment damage, and enhances worker safety.

Utility Infrastructure Protection Technology:

  • Low Power Level Sensor with Battery Backup: The vault may not have utility power. The sensor operates on a long life battery pack (5 years) or a small solar panel if a handhole is available. It uses ultrasonic or pressure technology with very low energy consumption. The sensor wakes up every 15 minutes to measure level and transmit via cellular (LTE M) or LoRaWAN.

  • Automatic Sump Pump Activation: The system controls a 12 or 24 volt DC submersible pump (or switches a 120 VAC pump via a relay). When the water level reaches the pump start setpoint, the pump turns on. When the level falls to the stop setpoint (e.g., 5 centimeters), the pump turns off. The pump run time is logged, and an alert is sent if the pump runs for an unusually long time (indicating excessive inflow or pump failure).

  • Two Way Communication for Remote Control: The utility dispatcher can, from a central dashboard, remotely turn the pump on or off, change setpoints, or request an immediate level reading. This is useful for confirming system operation after a storm or before sending a crew.

  • Critical High Level Breaker Trip Interlock: For vaults with live high voltage equipment, the system includes a dry contact relay wired to the upstream circuit breaker's shunt trip coil. If the water level reaches a critical high setpoint (e.g., within 2 centimeters of the minimum electrical clearance), the relay closes, tripping the breaker and de energizing the vault. This prevents a deadly arc flash when a crew later opens the manhole cover.

Utility Vault Operation Workflow:

  1. Sensor Placement and Setpoint Configuration: The level sensor is mounted near the bottom of the vault, above the normal dry level. The pump start, stop, high alarm, and critical high setpoints are configured via a mobile app.

  2. Automatic Pumping and Alerting: When rain causes flooding, the system pumps automatically. The dispatcher receives an alert: "Vault ID 1234 water level 25 cm, pump started." If the pump runs for more than 30 minutes, a second alert is sent: "Prolonged pumping, possible high inflow."

  3. Emergency Response: If the water level reaches critical high, the system trips the breaker and sends an alert. The dispatcher dispatches a crew equipped with pumping equipment and safety gear.
