ABB RET670 1MRK002816-AC is an ANSI pre-configured digital transformer protection intelligent electronic device (IED). As the “safety guard” for power transformers, it is specially designed for two‑winding / three‑winding transformers, autotransformers, generator‑transformer units, phase‑shifting transformers, shunt reactors and other equipment. Integrating protection, measurement, control and monitoring, it is a core device ensuring the safe and stable operation of transformers in substation automation systems.

I. Core Functions and Technical Advantages

1. Full‑Scenario Protection Capability

Main Protection: High‑Speed Percentage Biased Differential ProtectionBuilt with a high‑performance differential protection algorithm, it supports multi‑breaker configurations (up to 6 restraining CT inputs). It features 2nd harmonic restraint (to avoid maloperation due to magnetizing inrush), 5th harmonic restraint (to prevent maloperation from over‑excitation) and waveform restraint. It provides extremely fast response and high sensitivity to high‑resistance faults such as internal turn‑to‑turn short circuits.

Backup Protection: Comprehensive Fault ProtectionCovers stepped overcurrent / earth fault overcurrent, undervoltage / overvoltage, zero‑sequence overcurrent, over‑excitation, temperature protection, breaker failure protection, etc. It covers all abnormal operating conditions of transformers, realizing dual “main + backup” protection.

Specialized Protection: Targeted Fault IsolationSupports zero‑sequence differential protection (for earth faults), impedance protection (for extended external faults) and tap‑changer control. It accurately handles fault types in complex power systems and prevents fault escalation.

2. High‑Precision Measurement and Monitoring

Electrical Quantity Measurement: Adopts advanced digital signal processing technology to accurately measure voltage, current, frequency, power, phasors, sequence components and other parameters. The measurement accuracy reaches ±0.5%, meeting substation metering and monitoring requirements.

Condition Monitoring: Collects real‑time operating data such as transformer oil temperature and winding temperature. It supports fault recording (up to 100 records, FIFO), enabling full fault traceability and providing a basis for fault analysis.

Event Recording: Supports SOE (Sequence of Events) recording with a time resolution ≤ 1 ms, accurately recording protection operations and alarm information for convenient operation and maintenance traceability.

3. High‑Reliability Communication and Integration

Standard Communication Protocols: Equipped with IEC 61850‑8‑1 (Ethernet 100BASE‑FX), Modbus RTU/TCP, DNP3.0, IEC 60870‑5‑103 and other protocols. It seamlessly connects to substation automation (SA) systems, SCADA and dispatch centers for remote monitoring and data exchange.

Local and Remote O&M: Supports local HMI operation. Parameter setting, status monitoring and fault diagnosis can also be performed remotely via the PCM600 configuration software, reducing operation and maintenance costs.

4. Industrial‑Grade Environmental Adaptability

Operating temperature range: -10℃ ~ +55℃ (extendable to -40℃ ~ +70℃ for some applications), relative humidity: 10% ~ 90% (non‑condensing). It adapts to complex substation environments such as high temperature, high humidity and dust.

Compliant with IEC 60255 EMC standards, it has strong anti‑interference performance and ensures stable operation in strong electromagnetic environments.

III. Application Scenarios

Substation Transformer Protection: Covers main transformers, unit transformers and station service transformers at voltage levels including 220 kV and 500 kV. As the main protection device, it quickly clears internal faults and ensures power supply reliability.

Power Plant Generator‑Transformer Units: Provides coordinated protection for generators and transformers, handling complex faults such as magnetizing inrush, over‑excitation and internal short circuits, meeting the high‑reliability operation requirements of power plants.

Renewable Energy Plants (Wind / Solar): Supports pad‑mounted transformers and main transformers, adapting to the fluctuation characteristics of renewable energy systems and ensuring the safe and stable operation of grid‑connected transformers.

Industrial Enterprise Substations: Provides full‑condition protection for internal distribution transformers, avoiding production interruptions caused by faults and reducing operation and maintenance costs.

IV. Common Faults and Solutions

Fault Symptom Possible Causes Solutions
Device fails to power up Incorrect power wiring / abnormal supply voltage 1. Check power polarity and voltage range (110~250V AC / 90~250V DC);2. Measure input voltage with a multimeter
Differential protection maloperation CT polarity reversed / CT ratio mismatch 1. Check CT secondary wiring polarity;2. Verify CT ratio and device settings, re‑tune if needed
Communication lost (IEC 61850) Loose fiber connection / IP address conflict 1. Check fiber interface and link;2. Verify device IP and subnet mask for consistency with the host system
Excessive measurement deviation Poor PT/CT secondary connection 1. Tighten PT/CT secondary terminals;2. Re‑calibrate PT/CT ratios and device measurement settings
Device alarm (temperature abnormality) Faulty temperature sensor / loose wiring 1. Inspect temperature sensor and connections;2. Test sensor output; replace if necessary
