The "three filters" of the screw air compressor refer to the air filter, the oil filter, and the oil separator. These three components work together to ensure the safety of the main unit, the cleanliness of the oil, and the purity of the compressed air. Here is the detailed working principle:
1. Air Filter (Air Filter): The first line of defense for intake air
Core function: Filters out dust, sand particles, metal debris, etc. from the air being inhaled, protecting the rotor and bearings of the main unit.
Working principle:
Physical interception: The tiny gaps in the filter paper / fiber filter material block particles larger than the gaps.
Inertial collision: Large particles are captured by the inertia of the air upon impact with the fibers.
Diffusion adsorption: Micro-particles (
Filter accuracy: Usually 1–5μm, efficiency ≥ 99.5%.
Failure consequences: Impurities enter the main unit, accelerating wear, contaminating the lubricating oil, and causing premature clogging of the oil filter / oil separator.
2. Oil Filter (Oil Filter): The guardian of the lubrication system
Core function: Filters out metal debris, oxidized gel substances, and impurities in the lubricating oil, maintaining the cleanliness of the oil.
Working principle:
The lubricating oil flows through high-precision filter paper / glass fiber filter elements.
The filter elements intercept particles and adsorb gels, cleaning the oil and allowing it to enter the main unit to lubricate the bearings and rotor.
Filter accuracy: Approximately 10μm, capacity for pollutant absorption ≥ 8g.
Failure consequences: Impurities enter the friction surfaces, accelerating wear, increasing oil temperature, and causing abnormal noise from the main unit.
3. Oil Separator (Oil Separator Core): The key for separating gas and liquid
Core function: Separates the compressed gas and oil mixture, recovers the lubricating oil, and outputs low-oil-content compressed air (≤3ppm).
Working principle:
Primary separation: The mixed gas and oil enter the separator, where centrifugal force and gravity cause large oil droplets to settle back into the oil pool.
Fine separation: The remaining oil mist (0.01–1μm) passes through multiple layers of ultra-fine glass fiber filter materials, where diffusion, collision, and condensation form large oil droplets.
Recirculation: The large oil droplets return by gravity, and pure compressed air is discharged.
Separation efficiency: ≥ 99.9%, exhaust oil content ≤ 3ppm.
Failure consequences: Compressed air with excessive oil content, increased fuel consumption, and downstream equipment contamination.
The interrelationship of the three filters
The air filter protects the main unit and the lubricating oil → The oil filter protects the lubrication system → The oil separator ensures air quality and fuel consumption.
Any failure of a filter will trigger a chain reaction, affecting the overall lifespan and operating costs of the machine.
I. Air Filter (Air Filter)
Function: Filter dust and protect the main rotor
Normal replacement period
General conditions: 1500 - 2000 hours
High dust environment: Within 1000 hours
Judgment for replacement / cleaning
Air compressor shows air filter pressure difference alarm
Observe with your eyes, the filter element is obviously black and clogged
The suction noise of the unit increases, and the exhaust volume decreases
Maintenance points
Gently tap to remove dust, do not wash with water
Damaged or deformed parts should be replaced directly, do not use makeshift solutions
II. Oil Filter (Oil Filter)
Function: Filter impurities and gums in the lubricating oil
Normal replacement period
Ordinary mineral oil: 2000 hours
Synthetic oil: 3000 - 4000 hours
Synthetic oil: 4000 - 6000 hours
Judgment for replacement
High oil filter pressure difference alarm
High oil temperature, insufficient lubrication of the main unit
Must replace the oil filter every time the lubricating oil is replaced
Maintenance points
When installing the new oil filter, pre-apply oil to the sealing gasket
Tighten moderately, do not forcefully twist
III. Oil-Gas Separator (Oil Separation Core)
Function: Separate compressed air from lubricating oil, reduce fuel consumption
Normal replacement period
Regular conditions: 3000 - 4000 hours
High-quality oil separation: 4000 - 6000 hours
Judgment for replacement
Oil separation pressure difference alarm (generally > 0.8 - 1.0 bar)
Air compressor fuel consumption suddenly increases
Exhaust air contains oil, oil mist
Exhaust pressure cannot rise, current is high
Maintenance points
Check the return oil pipe and one-way valve for blockage during replacement
Do not use damaged parts, otherwise, a large amount of oil leakage will occur
IV. Simple and easy-to-remember universal mnemonic (suitable for promotion)
Air filter blocked → Main unit wears out
Oil filter dirty → Poor lubrication
Oil separation broken → High fuel consumption
Replace the three filters on time → Machine durable, fewer faults, lower cost
