The Woodward 8237-1597 overspeed protection module is a high-performance overspeed detection system, mainly used to protect the safe operation of various types of turbines. Functional Characteristics
  • Overspeed and Acceleration Detection: It can monitor the rotor speed and acceleration of equipment such as steam, gas and water turbines. When an overspeed or excessive acceleration event is detected, it can trigger a shutdown command to safely shut down the turbine.

  • Multiple Output Configurations: It is equipped with dual redundant trip relay outputs (adopting a two-out-of-three voting architecture), or three independent non-voting trip relay outputs with separate alarm relays. It also provides 4-20mA speed reading and Modbus communication functions, facilitating integration into any turbine safety system.

  • Automatic Overspeed Testing: It can be configured to perform regular automatic overspeed tests. Each module can conduct tests in sequence, using an internal frequency generator to simulate overspeed conditions, and record and report test results.

  • Sensor Detection: The speed sensor input of each module uses a special MPU (magnetoelectric speed sensor) open-wire detection circuit. It verifies whether the MPU is correctly connected before the turbine operates, and verifies the MPU function through a special stall detection logic during operation.

Working Principle
It real-time monitors the speed and acceleration of the turbine rotor through active or passive MPU magnetoelectric speed sensors, converts the speed signal into an electrical signal and transmits it to the inside of the module. The module analyzes and processes the received speed signal, calculates the actual speed and acceleration values, and compares them with the preset overspeed and acceleration thresholds. When the actual value exceeds the threshold, the module will trigger the internal circuit, output a signal through the trip relay, send a shutdown command to the turbine's trip system, and make the turbine emergency stop, thereby realizing the overspeed protection function.

At the same time, it can record all trips, alarms, trip valve response times and overspeed events, with a maximum of the last 50 sensing trips or alarm events and the last 20 overspeed events recorded, which is convenient for fault  and maintenance.
