Is Steel Structure Coating Applicable to BS 476-21 Fire Resistance Standard?
What is steel structure coating?
Fire-retardant coating for steel structure is a coating used in construction projects. Steel structure usually loses its bearing capacity and undergoes great deformation at a temperature of 450-650℃, causing bending of steel columns and steel beams. As a result, it cannot continue to be used due to excessive deformation. Generally, the fire resistance limit of unprotected steel structure is about 15 minutes.
Ø According to the fire prevention mechanism, steel structure fire retardant coating is divided into:
a) Intumescent steel structure fire retardant coating: The coating expands and foams at high temperature to form a fire-resistant and heat-insulating protective layer of steel structure fire retardant coating. The industry is used to use the old standard name, that is, the intumescent fire retardant coating is a combination of ultra-thin structural fire retardant coating and thin steel structure fire retardant coating.
b) Non-intumescent steel structure fire retardant coating: The coating does not expand and foam at high temperature, and it itself becomes a fire-resistant and heat-insulating protective layer of steel structure fire retardant coating. The industry is used to use the old standard name, that is, non-intumescent fire retardant coating is a thick fire retardant coating.
Steel structure coatings can be tested in accordance with BS 476-21, depending on the product's scope of application as specified in BS 476-21.
ØRefer to BS 476-21 Product range:
BS476-21 is mainly used to evaluate the fire resistance of load-bearing building materials under high temperature conditions. It is mainly used to determine the load-bearing capacity, integrity and thermal insulation of beams, floor materials, ceiling materials and walls exposed to high temperature and high pressure conditions within a specified time.
BS 476-21 Standard Name:
BS476-21: Fire test on building materials and structures-Part 21: Method for Determination of the fire resistance of load bearing elements of construction.
The most critical factor in the fire resistance test of steel structure coatings is the thermal insulation performance. You can refer to the standard furnace temperature changes:
According to the standard regulations, the time-temperature is controlled, and the different temperatures at different times are shown as follows:
538°C at 5 min
795°C at 20 min
843°C at 30 min
927°C at 1 h
1010°C at 2 h
1093°C at 4 h
