Can a Raincoat Apply to the 16 CFR 1611 Flammability Standard for Polyethylene Plastic Film?
What is the name of the standard?
16 CFR 1611:Standard for the flammability of vinyl plastic film
What ranges does it apply to?
The rate of burning shall not exceed 1.2in/sec as judged by the average of five determinations lengthwise and five determinations transverse to the direction of processing,when the material is tested with the SPI flammability tester in accordance with the method described in 1611.4.
What are the sample requirements?
Test specimens shall be 3 in.in width and 9 in.in length.They shall be free from folds or wrinkles. Five specimens from each direction(machine and transverse)of a given material shall be tested.
What testing methods are required?
(1) Put the sample in the test equipment for fire test as required
(2) Calculate the average combustion rate of 5 transverse samples and the average combustion rate of 5 longitudinal samples, if the burning rate exceeds 1.2 inches per second, the result is considered to be a failure.
(3) At least two samples ignite and burn the limit line of the specimen. If less than two of the five specimens in any given five specimens ignite and burn the specimen limit line, the following results are given:
A: If there is no sample ignited and burned the limit line, the result of the group of samples is deemed to pass;
B: If only one specimen ignites and burns the limit line, the result is regarded as unqualified;
What other standards are there?
NFPA 701: Standard for Test Methods for Flame Propagation of Fabrics and Films
16 CFR 1631: Standard Test for Flammability of Carpet and Cushion Surfaces
ASTM D 4151: Test for Flammability of Blankets
ISO 6941: Textile Fabrics - Combustion Behavior - Determination of Flame Spread Performance of Burning Samples in the Vertical Direction
ISO 12952-2: Textiles – Items for the assessment of the flammability of bedding – Part 2: Ignition source: Simulated matches
