Functional Features
  • Rich Connectivity: It can connect with Modbus masters and slaves, as well as Foxboro and Honeywell Distributed Control Systems (DCS). It also supports communication with other Tricon devices in Peer-to-Peer networks and external hosts on TCP/IP networks, meeting the connection needs of various industrial equipment and systems.

  • Support for Remote I/O: It can support remote I/O modules within a distance of 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) from the main rack, facilitating the construction of distributed control systems and expanding the control range of the system.

  • Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) Structure: Based on the TMR technology of the Tricon system, the module consists of three identical system channels. Each channel independently executes control programs and works in parallel with the other two channels. A 2-out-of-3 voting mechanism ensures data accuracy and reliability. Faults in any sub-circuit will not propagate to others, enhancing the system's fault tolerance.

  • High Reliability and Availability: Compliant with IEC 61508/61511 standards, it features hardware voting and self-diagnostic functions. Digital inputs/outputs undergo voting and diagnostics, while analog inputs are processed via median selection. It can online detect and correct transient and steady-state faults. Maintenance (with hot standby cards operational) can be performed online without interrupting process control, achieving a system reliability and availability rate of up to 99.9998%.

  • Reduced Main Processor Load: Input and output modules have intelligent functions. The microprocessor in input modules filters, repairs inputs, and diagnoses hardware faults. The microprocessor in output modules provides information for output data voting, checks output validity via feedback loop voltage, and diagnoses excitation line issues—thus reducing the workload of the main processor.

  • Support for Large I/O Points: The system supports up to 118 sets of I/O or communication modules, with a maximum capacity of 2048 digital inputs, 1024 digital outputs, 1024 analog inputs, 512 analog outputs, and 80 pulse inputs, meeting large-scale industrial control requirements.

  • Data Acquisition and Input: Each main processor has an independent I/O communication processor managing data exchange between the main processor and I/O modules. When an input module is queried, the corresponding branch of the triple I/O bus on the rack backplane aggregates new input data into a table, which is stored in the main processor’s memory for subsequent hardware voting.

  • Data Transmission and Bus Communication: Three main processors communicate via a high-speed bus system called TRIBUS. Each input table in a main processor is transmitted to adjacent processors via TriBus, enabling data transfer between the three units. TriBus also synchronizes data using direct memory access for programmable logic data.

  • Hardware Voting Mechanism: The Tricon system uses a 2-out-of-3 voting method. During data transmission, digital inputs/outputs from the field undergo voting and diagnostics, while analog inputs are processed via median selection. If data inconsistency occurs among the three processors, the majority result (two consistent signals) corrects the third, ensuring accuracy and preventing system failure due to single-point faults.

  • Fault Diagnosis and Handling: The module has built-in diagnostics to automatically detect faults in modules, field signal lines, sensors, and actuators. Anomalies are flagged, and Tricon’s internal fault analyzer identifies faulty modules after scanning. Faults and related data are stored in Non-Volatile Random-Access Memory (NVRAM). The system automatically isolates faulty components and allows online repair without interrupting process control.

  • Communication with External Systems: Supporting third-party protocols such as Modbus, DDE, and OPC UA, the module exchanges data with other control systems or devices—transmitting processed data or receiving control commands—to enable information sharing and collaborative operation across the entire industrial control system.
