VS1053b is a single-chip Ogg Vorbis/MP3/AAC/- WMA/MIDI audio decoder and an IMA ADPCM with a user loadable Ogg Vorbis encoder. It includes a high-performance, proprietary low-power DSP processor core VS DSP4, working data memory, 16 KiB instruction memory, and 0.5+KiB data memory for user applications to run simultaneously with any built-in decoder, serial control, and input data interface, up to 8 universal I/O pins, UART, and a high-quality variable sampling stereo ADC (microphone, line, line+microphone or 2) × Line and stereo DAC, followed by a headphone amplifier and a common voltage buffer.

VS1053b receives its input bit stream through the serial input bus and listens as a system slave. The input stream is decoded and transmitted to an 18 bit oversampled, multi bit, sigma incremental DAC through a digital volume control. Decoding is controlled through a serial control bus. In addition to basic decoding, application specific features such as DSP effects can also be added to the user's RAM memory.

The optional factory programmable unique chip ID provides the foundation for digital rights management or unit recognition functions.
