Caliper disc brake is a kind of disc brake. Its rotating components are metal discs that work on the end face, known as brake discs. Fixed components are brake pads composed of friction blocks with a small working area and their metal backing plates. There are 2-4 brake pads in each brake, and these brake pads and their actuators are installed in clamp shaped brackets spanning both sides of the brake disc, collectively known as brake calipers. The brake disc and brake caliper together constitute a caliper disc brake.
A component that generates braking torque and is used to hinder the movement or trend of a vehicle. At present, friction brakes are commonly used in automobiles, which generate braking torque by friction between fixed and rotating components on the working surface.
According to the different installation positions, the brakes can be divided into wheel brakes and central brakes. The brake with rotating components fixed on the wheel or half axle is called a wheel brake; The brake with rotating components fixed on the transmission shaft of the transmission system is called a central brake. Wheel brakes are generally used for service braking, as well as for emergency braking and parking braking; The central brake is generally only used for parking and slow braking.
According to the different rotating components, friction brakes can be divided into two categories: drum type and disc type. The rotating component in the friction pair of drum brakes is the brake drum, with its cylindrical surface as the working surface; The rotating element in the friction pair of the disc brake is a disc like brake disc, with its end face as the working surface.
The disc brake can be divided into caliper disc brake and full disc brake according to the different structural forms of its fixed components. The fixed elements and rotating elements of the friction pair of the full disc brake are disc shaped, which are called fixed disc and rotating disc respectively. All working surfaces of the brake disc can be in contact with the friction plate at the same time, and its structural principle is similar to that of a friction clutch.
