Floating caliper disc brake

The brake caliper of floating caliper disc brake is generally designed to slide axially relative to the brake disc. The hydraulic cylinder is only installed on the inner side of the brake disc, while the outer brake block is attached to the caliper body.

Figure 2 is the structural diagram of floating caliper disc brake. The brake caliper bracket 3 is fixed on the steering knuckle, and the brake caliper body 1 and bracket 3 can slide axially along the guide pin 2. When braking, piston 8, under the action of hydraulic force p1, pushes the movable brake block 6 (with friction block wear alarm device) towards the brake disc 4. At the same time, the reaction force p2 acting on the brake caliper body 1 pushes the brake caliper body to move to the right along the guide pin 2, causing the fixed brake block 5 fixed on the brake caliper body to press against the brake disc. So, the friction blocks on both sides of the brake disc clamp the brake disc under the action of p1 and p2, causing it to generate a braking torque on the brake disc in the opposite direction of motion, promoting the car to brake.

In contrast to the fixed caliper disc brake, the single side hydraulic cylinder structure of the floating caliper disc brake does not need to cross the oil passage of the brake disc, so not only the axial and radial dimensions are smaller, it is possible to arrange them closer to the wheel hub, but also the brake fluid is less likely to be heated and vaporized.

In addition, when the floating caliper disc brake is used to charge both the service and parking brakes, it is not necessary to add a parking brake caliper. Instead, it is only necessary to add some parking brake mechanical transmission parts near the hydraulic cylinder of the service brake caliper to push the piston of the hydraulic cylinder.
