I. What is Graphite Packing Graphite packing, also known as flexible graphite packing or expanded graphite filler rope, a square sealing filler woven from high-purity expanded graphite. Some products are reinforced with embedded stainless steel or nickel wires and impregnated with PTFE emulsion to enhance corrosion resistance. It is used for shaft sealing in equipment such as pumps, valves, agitator shafts, boilers, and pipelines to prevent medium leakage.
II. Main Classifications and Differences 1 Pure Graphite Packing (No Metal Wire) Material: Pure expanded graphite woven, no metal reinforcement Advantages: Soft texture, non-damaging to shafts, good self-lubation, low friction, affordable price Applications: Low-pressure and ambient temperature, particle-free media, ordinary water, light steam equipment Disadvantages: Prone to deformation and under high pressure, average pressure-bearing capacity 2. 304 Stainless Steel Wire Graphite Packing Internal reinforcement with woven stainless steel wire skeleton Advantages: High strength, pressure resistance, good resilience, does not easily fray Applications: Boilers, high-temperature steam pumps, ordinary chemical valves, conventional power plant equipment 3. Nickel Wire Reinforced Packing (Low Sulfur, Non-Burn-off) Woven with nickel alloy wire, low sulfur formula, does not corrode valve stems at high temperatures Advantages: High resistance, oxidation resistance, strong steam resistance, non-corrosive to metal shafts, specialized for power plants and oil refineries Applications: High-temperature and high-pressure steam, oil refining equipment, high-temperature steam valves, high-temperature reactors 4. PTFE Impregnated Graphite Packing Graphite woven and then impregnated with PTFE emulsion Advantages Resistant to strong acids and alkalis, resistant to organic solvents, wear-resistant, doubled corrosion resistance Applications: Corrosive chemical media, acid-alkali pumps, electroplating 5. Graphite Packing Rings (Molded Packing Rings) Graphite packing is molded into rings, which can be directly fitted onto valve stems. It is easy to install, a more stable sealing effect, and requires no winding.
III. Core Performance Advantages High Temperature Resistance: Conventional graphite packing has an operating temperature of -20°C to 50°C, stable in steam conditions; the nickel wire version can withstand high-temperature flues and superheated steam for long periods. High Pressure Resistance: Metal wire versions can withstand pressures of over 25MPa, suitable for boilers and high-pressure valves. Self-Lubricating and Wear-Resistant: Graphite is inherently lubricating, reducing wear and extending equipment service life. Corrosion Resistance: Resistant to water, steam, oils, and weak acids/alkalis; the PTFE-impregnated version can withstand highly chemical media. Excellent Resilience: Quickly rebounds after compression, filling the gap between the shaft and the packing box to eliminate leakage. Asbestos-Free and Environmentally Friendly: no asbestos dust, complies with industrial environmental standards, and poses no carcinogenic risk.
