Rust Resistant Knock Down Kitchen Shelving for Walk-in Cooler — 40/50cm Depth Stainless Steel Rack for Cold Storage

Product Overview

A walk-in cooler isn't a regular storage room. The temperature is low, humidity is high, and condensation is constant — a regular rack starts rusting in months.

This knock down cold storage shelving unit is built for low-temperature, high-humidity environments. Available in 40cm and 50cm depth to match your cooler aisle width. Stainless steel with anti-rust treatment, flat-pack shipping — no matter if your cooler is in the basement or on the 2nd floor, it gets through the door.

Why You Can't Use a Regular Rack in a Walk-in Cooler

1. Condensation + Humidity — Rust Is a Matter of When, Not If

Walk-in coolers typically run between 0°C and -18°C. The temperature differential creates constant condensation. Once epoxy coating on carbon steel gets a scratch, moisture gets in and rust starts from the inside out.

Stainless steel handles this dramatically better. Our shelves go through an anti-rust surface treatment that adds an extra protection layer against condensation corrosion.

For coastal cities or high-humidity environments, we recommend 304 stainless steel for walk-in cooler applications. The difference in corrosion resistance is meaningful over a 3-5 year horizon.

2. Cooler Aisles Are Narrow — Get the Depth Right the First Time

Cooler aisles are typically narrower than dry storage rooms. If the rack depth is too large, the cart won't clear. If it's too small, you're wasting storage volume.

We offer 40cm and 50cm depth options:

Depth When to Choose
40cm Narrow cooler aisles, single-person cart access, compact spaces
50cm Wider aisles (1.2m+ clear), maximizes storage volume

Rule of thumb: If your cooler aisle clear width is under 1.2m, go 40cm depth. Over 1.2m, 50cm gives you 25% more storage volume without blocking the aisle.

3. Butterfly Buckle System — You Don't Want to Reassemble Inside a -18°C Cooler

Once the rack is in the cooler, you really don't want to be adjusting it in there.

Our butterfly buckle system lets you set the shelf height before it goes into the cooler. Release, adjust, lock — one person, a few minutes per shelf. And if you need to reconfigure later, you can do it without tools — no need to disassemble the whole unit and drag it out to the warm.

(One thing we've seen with competitor units: buckles loosening after 6 months in temperature-cycling environments. Ours use a double-lock design that stays put through freeze-thaw cycles.)

4. Triangular Reinforcement — Cold Storage Racks Are Dense-Loaded

Walk-in cooler storage tends to be dense and uniform — cardboard boxes, plastic bins, frozen ingredients. The load pattern is different from a dry storage room where items vary in size and weight distribution.

Each shelf has triangular reinforcement ribs underneath to distribute weight evenly and resist flexing under sustained, dense loads.

Load capacity: 200-300 kg per shelf (evenly distributed), depending on tier count and shelf dimensions. We test every batch at 1.5x rated load before shipping.

5. Knock Down Shipping — Cooler Doors Are Small

Walk-in cooler doors are typically narrower than standard doors. Welded racks often won't fit through.

Our units ship knock down in compact cartons. They fit through standard cooler door frames, in freight elevators, and — this matters more than you'd think — two people can carry them up a stairwell if the cooler is in a basement or on a 2nd floor.

Volume reduction vs. welded racks: roughly 60-70%.

Where This Shelving Fits

  • Restaurant walk-in coolers — frozen ingredients, pre-prep items; 40cm depth for narrow aisles

  • Central kitchen freezing zones — bulk frozen ingredient storage; 50cm depth maximizes volume

  • Supermarket cold storage back-stock — uniform cardboard frozen goods, dense loading

  • Food factory frozen raw material storage — food-grade compliance, 304 recommended

  • Hotel cold storage — multi-category frozen items, adjustable shelves adapt to changing inventory

Frequently Asked Questions — Walk-in Cooler

Q: 201 or 304 for a walk-in cooler? A: If it's a refrigerator (above 0°C), 201 is adequate for most applications. If it's a freezer (0°C and below) with significant condensation, go 304. We've had customers with 201 racks in -18°C freezers develop surface rust after 2 years. It's not worth saving the money.

Q: How do I choose between 40cm and 50cm depth? A: Measure your cooler aisle clear width. Under 1.2m → 40cm. Over 1.2m → 50cm gives you more storage. If you're not sure, send us the measurements — we'll tell you straight.

Q: Can the shelves be adjusted after the rack is inside the cooler? A: Yes, no tools needed. But we recommend setting the heights before you put it in — adjusting shelves in a -18°C cooler is genuinely unpleasant.

Q: What about the floor? Cooler floors can be uneven. A: The base has adjustable leveling feet. Minor unevenness is compensated for. If the floor is significantly sloped, address that before installation.

Q: Do you have export experience? A: Yes. We've shipped to multiple overseas markets and understand export documentation, packaging, and compliance requirements for cold storage equipment.

About Us

We manufacture commercial kitchen equipment, and this cold storage shelving has gone through several design revisions based on real customer feedback.

The biggest changes came from things people only notice after a year or two: buckles loosening in freeze-thaw cycles (we switched to double-lock), uneven cooler floors (we added adjustable feet), shipping volume (we compressed the flat-pack design by another 15%).

Cold storage racking isn't something you want to replace in 2 years. We're not willing to cut corners on the things that matter.
