The Cold Storage Space Problem No One Talks About
Cold chain warehouses are expensive to build. The insulated panels, the refrigeration units, the floor heating system to prevent frost heave — by the time the room is ready, you have already spent tens of thousands. Then two years later, you need more storage space.
Adding square footage to a cold room is not like expanding a dry warehouse. You cannot just throw up another rack aisle. You need to cut through insulated panels, relocate evaporators, extend the refrigeration loop, and re-certify the temperature zone. That takes weeks and costs as much as the original build.
But here is something most warehouse managers do not realize: you do not need more room. You need more efficient shelving.
The Main Frame + Add-On Frame System — How It Works
Hengna's modular stainless steel shelving is built around a simple concept. Instead of every rack section being a standalone unit with four upright posts, the system separates into two roles:
Main frame (starter unit): A complete four-post rack section. Freestanding. Ready to use on its own. Add-on frame (extension unit): A two-post section that shares the main frame's uprights. Attaches to the side. Adds a full bay of storage.
The result looks like this:
1 main frame + 0 add-on frames = 1 section
1 main frame + 1 add-on frame = 2 sections (add-on costs less than a main frame)
1 main frame + 2 add-on frames = 3 sections
1 main frame + N add-on frames = N+1 sections
Run the math on a row of 10 main frames with 9 add-on frames between them. That is 19 sections of storage. Compared to buying 19 individual main frames, you save the cost of 9 sets of upright posts — roughly 25–30% of the total shelving investment.
In a cold chain warehouse where every square meter is tied to refrigeration cost, that saving is not small money.
Why This Matters in a Freezer
Cold chain warehouses run at -18°C to -25°C. Every pallet position counts. But here is the catch: the shelving structure itself takes up space. Standard individual racks have four uprights per section, which means more metal in the cold, more thermal mass, and fewer usable slots per linear meter.
With the main-frame-plus-add-on layout, shared uprights mean less metal between sections. You recover roughly 40–60 mm per shared post. Across a 20-meter row, that is nearly one additional shelf bay worth of space — without moving a single wall panel.
And because the add-on frames ship KD (knocked down), they arrive flat-packed. If your cold storage needs grow next year, you order add-on frames, not a whole new system. Your existing main frames stay in place. No need to empty and rebuild the entire aisle.
304 Stainless Steel — Non-Negotiable in a Freezer
The expansion system only works if the shelving itself survives the environment. In a cold chain warehouse, that means 304 stainless steel.
Here is what happens to steel in a cycling freezer:
Every time the door opens, warm moist air hits cold metal.
Condensation forms instantly.
During defrost cycles, water drips down the uprights.
On carbon steel, this cycle produces surface rust within weeks and structural pitting within two years.
On 304 stainless steel, the chromium oxide layer repels moisture. No pitting. No flaking. No rust stains on your product packaging.
Hengna uses 304 grade for all cold chain shelving. If your budget is tighter and the environment is dry storage only, 201 grade is available — but for frozen storage, reach-in coolers, and refrigerated warehouses, 304 is the correct call.
200kg Per Shelf — What It Means on the Floor
Load ratings make sense only when you translate them into what your team actually stacks.
Hengna's shelves are double-reinforced with embossed stiffener ribs and triangular gusset bracing at the corners. Static testing confirms 200 kg per level.
In frozen storage terms:
2 Euro pallets (800 × 1200 mm), each stacked 1.2 m high with frozen poultry cases
40 frozen turkey boxes (5 kg each) spread across one shelf
6 dairy crates filled with milk or yogurt
The C-channel uprights and thickened weld points prevent racking. The shelves will not sag under load, even in a -25°C environment where steel becomes slightly more brittle.
Export Packaging — Part of the Product
Cold chain shelving buyers are often overseas importers. The packaging has to survive 30+ days at sea, including the South China Sea humidity belt.

Three scenarios where this makes sense:
New cold room construction — specify main frames + add-on layout from the start. Future expansion costs drop by 25–30%.
Existing shelving needs replacing — if your current racks are rusting out (see the freezer moisture problem above), replace them with a main-frame system and leave room to extend later.
