UNS S30403 304L DIN EN 1.4307 Stainless Steel Introduction
UNS S30403 304L (DIN EN 1.4307) stainless steel is an ultra-low carbon austenitic stainless steel, with excellent comprehensive corrosion resistance,formability and weldability superior to the standard 304 stainless steel grade.The outstanding general corrosion resistance,post-weld intergranular corrosion resistance,excellent cold formability and non-magnetic annealed state of this alloy allow it to be the most widely used general-purpose stainless steel for food processing,chemical engineering,architectural decoration, kitchenware, pressure vessels and environmental protection equipment applications.
Machinability
Stainless steel grade UNS S30403 304L has machinability characteristics that are similar to other common austenitic stainless steels; however it requires slower cutting speeds, higher machine power, and greater rigidity due to its high work hardening rate and ductile chip formation. It is recommended that coated carbide tooling be used for optimal machining performance.
Forming
Stainless steel grade UNS S30403 304L can be formed using the same methods applied for other austenitic stainless steels. Slightly higher power for forming and forging is needed for this alloy compared to low carbon steels. Hot forging can be done at 925-1230°C(1700-2250°F).
Welding
Welding of stainless steel grade UNS S30403 304L can be performed using all traditional fusion and resistance joining processes.Recommended filler metal should be AWS E/ER308L to match the composition and corrosion resistance of the base material. Owing to its ultra-low carbon content, post-weld heat treatment is generally not required for most applications. Caution should be taken while using excessive heat input during welding, to avoid grain growth and degradation of mechanical and corrosion properties.
Heat Treatment
Final solution annealing process performed for most of the applications, is done at 1010-1120°C (1850-2050°F), which is followed by water quenching. In case this material is used in a strongly corrosive environment, annealing should be done at the upper end of the temperature range (1090-1120°C / 2000-2050°F) to ensure full carbide dissolution. This alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment, and can only achieve increased strength through cold working.

1. Smelting and Casting: Scrap steel and alloys (chromium, nickel, etc.) are melted in an electric arc furnace, impurities are
removed through AOD/VOD refining, and finally, steel billets are continuously cast.
2. Hot Rolling and Annealing: After heating,the steel billets are pressed into hot-rolled plates through a rolling mill. Annealing is then performed to eliminate hardness,and surface oxide scale is removed with acid (descaling).
3. Cold Rolling and Finishing: To obtain thinner and flatter plates, the plates are rolled again at room temperature (cold rolling), and then annealed and surface tempered as needed.
4. Cutting and Surface Treatment: Laser or waterjet cutting is performed as required, followed by final surface finishing treatments such as wire drawing, polishing (mirror finish), or sandblasting.
