Generally, zinc blocks are embedded in the hulls of seagoing vessels. Since the hulls are made of steel, steel will undergo electrochemical reactions in seawater, corroding the hull. Zinc is more reactive than iron. In seawater, zinc will react before iron. Zinc loses electrons and is corroded, while iron is protected from corrosion, thus protecting the hull. In this reaction, zinc acts as the anode, losing electrons and being corroded, while iron acts as the cathode and is protected. This is the so-called cathodic protection method of sacrificial anodes.

Methods/Steps

1. It should have a low self-corrosion rate and uniform corrosion, and a high and stable current efficiency.

2. It should have a high electrochemical equivalent, that is, a large amount of current is generated per unit weight.

3. During operation, the anodic polarization should be small, the dissolution should be uniform, and the products should be easy to fall off.

4. It should have a sufficiently negative and stable potential.

5. The corrosion products should not pollute the environment and be harmless.

What is an anode?

 

Sacrificial anodes protect the cathode. Here, it refers to adding a more active metal. When a galvanic cell is formed, the more active metal preferentially acts as the negative electrode, losing electrons to form cations, thus protecting the original metal.

 

Aluminum alloy sacrificial anodes have extremely high electrochemical performance. The power generation of anode materials per unit weight is large, about three times that of zinc anodes and twice that of magnesium anodes. For example, when a Zn plate is added under the ship, in seawater as the electrolyte solution, Zn reacts preferentially to protect Fe. In seawater and other media containing chloride ions, it has good performance and strong self-adjusting ability to generate current.

 

Zinc alloy sacrificial anodes have good self-solubility, high current efficiency, and good self-adjusting performance for the current generated by the anode.

Casting holes are allowed on the working surface of the sacrificial anode, but their depth shall not exceed 10% of the anode thickness, and the maximum depth shall not exceed 10mm. 8.4 The working surface of the sacrificial anode shall be kept clean and free from paint, oil, etc. 9 Iron feet 9.1 Plate - shaped iron feet are made of carbon structural steel bars.
