1. What are Carbide Flat-Top Teeth?

They are cylindrical or near-cylindrical parts made from tungsten carbide (WC) and cobalt (Co) and other metals

through powder metallurgy sintering. Their most distinctive feature is a flat top, rather than a spherical or conical shape.

Common Grades: Common grades include YG8, YG8C, and YG11C. These grades represent different tungsten carbide

grain sizes and cobalt content to suit different rock hardnesses.

Structural Characteristics: They typically have high compressive strength and good wear resistance. The flat top design

allows for more even stress distribution during impact, preventing chipping and cracking.

2. Main Application Scenarios

Due to their unique shape and mechanical properties, flat-top teeth are mainly used in the following areas:

1) Rock Drilling and Mining:

Down-the-hole drill bits: Flat-top teeth are often embedded in the head or gauge-retaining position of down-the-hole

drill bits for drilling in medium-hard and harder rocks.

Geological exploration: Used in geological core drilling tools, especially in conditions requiring high stability.

2) Road Milling and Crushing:

Road milling machines: Installed on the milling drum, used to remove old asphalt or concrete pavements. The flat

design facilitates "cutting" and "scraping" of road materials.

Crushing hammers/picks: Used as "teeth" for crushing concrete and rocks, utilizing the high compressive strength

of the flat top for crushing operations.

3) Snow Removal Equipment (Snow Plows):

This is a very special application. Carbide flat-top teeth are installed on large mechanical snow plows. When the

snow plow encounters icy roads or hidden obstacles, these hard flat-top teeth protect the blade while breaking up

the ice, preventing equipment damage.

3. Flat-Top Teeth vs. Ball Teeth: What's the Difference?

In the mining and engineering fields, ball teeth (Round Tooth) and flat-top teeth (Flat-top Tooth) each have their

advantages. You can refer to the table below for differentiation:

Characteristics

Carbide Ball Teeth (Round Tooth): The tip is spherical, with point contact, resulting in stress concentration, suitable

for "chiseling" and "crushing". Wear resistance is relatively weaker (because the contact area is small, wear is faster).

It has good impact resistance and is not prone to chipping, making it suitable for high-impact rock drills. It is commonly

used in drilling soft and medium-hard rock with handheld rock drills.

Carbide Flat-top Tooth: The top is flat, providing surface contact and relatively low pressure, suitable for "shearing,"

"scraping," and "grinding." It has better wear resistance (large contact area, even wear, and usually longer lifespan).

It also has good impact resistance, but the edges may chip under extremely high impact (depending on the grade).

Commonly used in drilling medium-hard and hard rock, road milling, snow plows, and down-the-hole drills.

Matrix type:

Tungsten-cobalt (YG): WC + Co (Suitable for machining brittle materials such as cast iron, non-ferrous metals, plastics, and stone.)

Tungsten-titanium-cobalt (YT): WC + TiC + Co (Suitable for machining ordinary steel (long-chip steel), as TiC effectively prevents steel from sticking.)

Tungsten-titanium-tantalum(niobium)-cobalt (YW): WC + TiC + TaC/NbC + Co (General-purpose matrix, suitable for machining both steel and cast iron and non-ferrous metals, especially suitable for difficult-to-machine materials.)
