The cemented carbide matrix is the "skeleton" or "foundation" of cemented carbide products. Simply put, it refers to the main material located beneath the surface coating in cemented carbide coated inserts, wear-resistant parts, or mining tools, providing support and mechanical properties.
The cemented carbide matrix is typically composed of refractory metal carbides (hard phase) and a binder metal (binder phase). It is the basis for determining whether a cemented carbide tool can withstand impact and wear.
1. The performance of the cemented carbide matrix mainly depends on the synergistic effect of its two internal phases:
1). Hard phase (skeleton):
Mainly tungsten carbide (WC), which is the most commonly used component, possessing extremely high hardness and melting point (>2000℃).
To improve specific properties (such as heat resistance and oxidation resistance), titanium carbide (TiC), tantalum carbide (TaC), or niobium carbide (NbC) may also be added.
2). Function: Provides high hardness and wear resistance, allowing the tool to cut hard metals.
3). Binder phase (blood):
Mainly cobalt (Co), followed by nickel (Ni) or iron (Fe).
4). Function: Binds the hard carbide particles together, giving the matrix a certain toughness and impact resistance.
5). Key point: The higher the binder content, the better the toughness of the matrix, but the hardness will decrease accordingly; and vice versa.
6). Cemented carbide matrices are called "industrial teeth" because they possess the following amazing characteristics:
7). Extremely high hardness and wear resistance: Even at high temperatures of 500℃, its hardness remains essentially unchanged; it still maintains high hardness at 1000℃.
8). High strength: It has very high compressive strength and bending strength, able to withstand the enormous pressure during the cutting process.
9). Heat resistance (hot hardness): This is the key advantage over ordinary high-speed steel, allowing it to maintain cutting performance at high temperatures.
Matrix type：
Tungsten-cobalt (YG): WC + Co (Suitable for machining brittle materials such as cast iron, non-ferrous metals, plastics, and stone.)
Tungsten-titanium-cobalt (YT): WC + TiC + Co (Suitable for machining ordinary steel (long-chip steel), as TiC effectively prevents steel from sticking.)
Tungsten-titanium-tantalum(niobium)-cobalt (YW): WC + TiC + TaC/NbC + Co (General-purpose matrix, suitable for machining both steel and cast iron and non-ferrous metals, especially suitable for difficult-to-machine materials.)
