What is CB Certification? What is the CB Certification Application Process?

CB certification is a product safety certification provided by the International Electrotechnical Commission's (IEC) CB mechanism. The CB mechanism is an international certification system where certification bodies worldwide mutually recognize test results and certificates. The main purpose of CB certification is to ensure that products meet international safety standards, enabling them to smoothly enter the global market. Through CB certification, products can be recognized and accepted in multiple countries/regions, reducing the cost and time of repeated testing and certification in different countries/regions.

I. CB Certification Application Process
1. Determine the Product Standard
2. Select the corresponding IEC standard (e.g., IEC 60335, IEC 60598, etc.) based on the product type (e.g., home appliances, lighting fixtures, IT equipment, etc.).
3. Note the differences in requirements of the target country (NCBs National Differences).
4. Submit the Application
5. Complete the application form and provide product technical documents (circuit diagrams, instruction manuals, BOM, etc.).
6. Some organizations require samples or pre-test reports.
7. Product Testing
8. The laboratory conducts tests according to IEC standards, including safety, EMC (if applicable), etc.
9. Common testing items: withstand voltage, temperature rise, mechanical protection, etc.

Issuance of CB Certificate and Report
Upon successful testing, NCB issues a CB certificate and a test report (CB Test Report).

The certificate is typically valid for 3 years (not mandatory, but some countries may require renewal).

Certificate Conversion (if required)
Apply for local certification (e.g., CE, KC, SAA, etc.) from the target country's certification body using the CB report. Supplementary testing may be required.

II. Required Materials
Product specification sheet, circuit diagram, PCB layout diagram
List of key components (existing certification information must be provided, such as UL/VDE certificates)
Product photos, label design
User manual (including safety warnings)
Declaration of differences (if applicable)

III. Notes
Fees and Timeframe
Fees vary depending on product complexity and the certification body (typically tens of thousands of RMB).

Timeframe: 4-8 weeks (assuming smooth testing).

Factory Inspection
CB certification usually does not require factory inspection, but some countries (e.g., India, Brazil) may require it for certificate conversion.

Standard Updates
IEC standards may be revised; ensure testing is based on the latest version.

Differences Between Countries

Countries such as South Korea (KC) and Australia (SAA) have additional requirements, requiring advance planning.

IV. Frequently Asked Questions

Difference between CB and CE: CB is an international voluntary certification, while CE is a mandatory EU entry requirement.

Can I export without a CB certificate?: Yes, but the target country may require repeated testing, increasing costs and time.
