UL4200A Certification Process Explained
I. Overview of UL4200A Standard
UL4200A is a mandatory safety standard established by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) specifically for consumer products containing button batteries or coin batteries. This standard was introduced to address injuries and fatalities caused by children accidentally swallowing button batteries, aiming to reduce such risks through stringent safety requirements. On September 21, 2023, the CPSC officially released this safety standard, which took effect on October 23, 2023. Effective October 23, 2023, all consumer products manufactured in or imported into the United States that contain button batteries or coin batteries must comply with this standard.
1. Regulatory Requirements
All products utilizing button batteries sold on U.S. marketplaces (e.g., Amazon) must pass UL 4200A:2023 safety standard testing and upload UL reports. Failure to comply risks product removal.
2. Primary Purpose of New Requirements
The core objective is to reduce the risk of children accidentally swallowing button batteries, ensuring product safety during use.
3. Reasons for UL4200 Testing and Certification for Suppliers and Sellers
UL4200 testing and certification applies to all household products that may use button or coin batteries. Testing is required even for products already sold. Failure to comply risks product removal from e-commerce platforms or recalls.
II. Scope of Applicable Products
Household products that contain or may use button or coin batteries.
Excludes children's toys compliant with 16 CFR Part 1250.
Excludes products specifically utilizing zinc-air battery technology.
Applies to consumer products containing button or coin batteries, but excludes those not intended for use where children may access them due to specialized purposes and instructions—such as professional or commercial applications in areas typically inaccessible to children.
