The 489-P5-HI-A20 is a generator management relay manufactured by GE Multilin. Its working principle mainly realizes the protection and control of generators through real-time monitoring of generator operating parameters, combined with preset protection logic and control strategies, while interacting with external systems through communication functions. The details are as follows:


Data Acquisition

  • Obtains 5A phase CT secondary current signals through current transformers (CTs) to monitor parameters such as generator load current.

  • Can access PT100/PT1000 temperature sensors to monitor motor winding temperature, bearing temperature, etc.

  • Also performs real-time measurement of generator voltage, frequency, and other parameters, providing a data foundation for subsequent protection and control.

Implementation of Protection Functions

  • The module integrates multiple protection algorithms and logics:

    • When the monitored current exceeds the overcurrent protection set value, it triggers protection actions (power cutoff or alarm signals) according to the preset instantaneous or inverse-time characteristics.

    • If the voltage deviates from the set normal range (such as undervoltage or overvoltage), the module responds promptly to prevent generator damage from voltage anomalies.

    • It also realizes ground fault protection through zero-sequence current monitoring, detects phase sequence and phase loss, and activates protection when phase sequence errors or phase loss occur. Meanwhile, it has functions such as locked rotor protection, overheat protection, and load unbalance protection to comprehensively ensure generator safety.


Execution of Control Functions

  • Controls generator start, stop, and switching operations based on preset logic or externally input control signals. For example:

    • After receiving a start signal from the control system, it controls the generator to close and start according to the set program.

    • During operation, it automatically adjusts the generator's operating status based on real-time monitored parameters and preset rules to ensure stable power system operation.

Analog Output and Communication

  • Transmits collected electrical parameters and other information to systems like PLC/DCS through 2-channel 4-20mA analog outputs for advanced data analysis and system integration.

  • The module is  (standard equipped with) an RS485 interface supporting Modbus RTU protocol for multi-device networking communication. It may also have an Ethernet interface supporting protocols like Modbus TCP to facilitate high-speed data interaction with remote monitoring systems, enabling functions such as remote monitoring and parameter setting.

Human-Machine Interaction and Settings

  • The front-panel LCD display real-time shows generator operating parameters, fault codes, setting menus, etc., allowing operators to intuitively understand equipment status.

  • Operators can set various module parameters and protection logics through front-panel operation buttons to adapt to different generator systems and operating environments.
