Test Standards
The equipment strictly follows the ASTM D635 test standard, which specifies a method for measuring the rate, degree and duration of burning of plastics by exposing building materials to temperatures of 750°C in a horizontal position. While it is not possible to fully replicate actual building fire exposure conditions, this test helps to evaluate materials that do not fuel combustion or add significant heat to the surrounding fire.
Test Method
Sample Preparation: Prepare two sets of three plastic samples, typically measuring 125 mm in length, 13 mm in width, and no more than 13 mm in thickness. The samples are left to condition for 48 hours at a temperature of 23°C and 50% relative humidity.
Flame conditioning: The methane gas flow rate was set to 105 ml/min and the burner flow rate and air intake were adjusted to obtain a 20 mm high flame.
Apply Flame: Apply the flame to one end of the sample and continue for 30 seconds. If the flame reaches the first 25mm mark within 30 seconds, stop flame application.
Data logging: Record and calculate key parameters such as burning rate, degree of combustion, and burning time.
Basis of judgment
Burning Rate: Calculated by measuring the distance the sample burns and the time taken, in millimeters per minute (mm/min). The lower the burning rate, the better the fire resistance.
Degree of burning: Measurement of the length of the sample burned during the test. The shorter the burning length, the higher the fire resistance.
Burning Time: Records the total time the sample burns after the flame is removed. Materials that self-extinguish quickly are considered to have better fire resistance.
