MVR Evaporator for Anhydrous Sodium Sulfate (Na₂SO₄) Production
Project Description
Anhydrous sodium sulfate (Na₂SO₄), also known as thenardite, is an important industrial chemical widely used in the detergent, glass, pulp and paper, textile, and chemical industries.
It is commonly produced by concentrating sodium sulfate-rich solutions, such as natural brines or chemical process by-products, through evaporation and crystallization. Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVR) technology offers an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly solution by recycling secondary vapor as the primary heat source, significantly reducing steam consumption and operating costs.
Process Flow
The MVR evaporator system continuously concentrates the sodium sulfate solution until it reaches supersaturation, promoting the crystallization of anhydrous sodium sulfate.
The supersaturated slurry is then transferred to a centrifuge for solid-liquid separation. Anhydrous sodium sulfate crystals are recovered as the final product, while the mother liquor is recycled to the evaporator for further concentration. This closed-loop process maximizes product recovery, minimizes wastewater discharge, and enables stable continuous operation.
The complete system typically includes:
Condensate preheater
Exhaust vapor preheater
Exhaust condenser
Forced circulation evaporator
Vapor scrubber
Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVR) unit
Thickener
Mother liquor tank
Centrifuge
Pumping system
DCS automatic control system
System Features
High Energy Efficiency
The MVR system recovers and recompresses secondary vapor for reuse as the heating source, reducing fresh steam consumption by up to 90% compared with conventional evaporation systems.
Optimized Forced Circulation Design
High circulation velocity minimizes scaling and tube fouling while ensuring stable heat transfer, making the system ideal for high-concentration sodium sulfate solutions and crystal slurries.
High Product Recovery
The crystallization process is carefully controlled to achieve efficient recovery of high-purity anhydrous sodium sulfate while maximizing yield.
Reliable Continuous Operation
An advanced DCS control system provides automatic monitoring and process control, ensuring stable operation, reduced maintenance, and lower operating costs.
Sustainable Resource Recovery
The system converts sodium sulfate-rich waste streams into valuable products while reducing wastewater discharge, helping customers achieve resource recovery and Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) objectives.
