1. Product Overview

Color coated steel coils (commonly known as PPGI and PPGL) are manufactured by applying organic paint coatings on cold rolled steel, hot‑dip galvanized steel, or hot‑dip galvalume steel substrates. After degreasing and chemical passivation pretreatment, the steel surface is continuously roller‑coated and cured at high temperature to form a uniform protective finish.

Color coated steel combines the mechanical strength and processability of steel with the corrosion resistance, weather durability and decorative appearance of organic coatings. The finished coils require no on‑site repainting and can be directly bent, profiled and cut. They are widely used in steel structure buildings, home appliances and decorative industries as lightweight anti‑corrosion materials.

2. Production Process

Coil uncoiling → Surface degreasing & cleaning → Chemical passivation pretreatment → Primer coating & baking → Topcoat coating & baking (back coating optional) → Air cooling → Surface quality inspection → Slitting / rewinding → Oil coating & film lamination (optional) → Final packaging & warehousing

The standard production process is two-coat two-bake (primer + topcoat). High-end outdoor products adopt a three-coat three-bake process to achieve superior weather resistance and anti-corrosion performance.

4. Common Substrates, Grades and Applications

4.1 Substrate Types

  • Hot‑dip Galvanized (GI): Cost-effective with strong coating adhesion. Suitable for general indoor and outdoor construction applications. Finished product known as PPGI.

  • Hot‑dip Galvalume (GL): Aluminum‑zinc alloy coating with 2–3 times higher corrosion resistance than ordinary galvanized steel. Ideal for coastal and highly corrosive environments. Finished product known as PPGL.

  • Cold Rolled Substrate: Ultra-smooth surface, suitable for high-end home appliances, interior decoration and precision sheet metal parts.

4.2 Main Steel Grades

  • DX51D+AZ / SGCC: General construction grade with excellent bending and profiling performance for roofing and wall cladding.

  • DX52D+AZ: Drawing grade for simple stamping and irregular sheet metal components.

  • DX53D+AZ: Deep drawing grade for home appliance shells and complex formed parts.

  • G550: High-strength structural grade with high hardness and load capacity, used for load-bearing roof panels and floor decks.

5. Coating Systems

5.1 PE (Polyester)

Cost-effective with excellent adhesion and flexibility and rich color options. Moderate weather resistance. Suitable for interior decoration, factory interior walls and temporary buildings. Service life: 5–8 years.

5.2 SMP (Silicon Modified Polyester)

Better anti-chalking and anti-fading performance than standard polyester with improved temperature resistance. Suitable for outdoor factories, warehouses and general exterior walls. Service life:8–12 years.

5.3 HDP (High Durability Polyester)

Specially formulated for harsh outdoor conditions with outstanding UV resistance, anti-aging and anti-fading properties. Designed for long-term exposed building panels. Service life: 12–15 years.

5.4 PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride)

High-end premium coating with extreme chemical stability, acid/alkali resistance and superior salt spray and UV resistance. Resistant to fading and chalking. Ideal for coastal high-corrosion areas, high-end venues and curtain wall projects. Service life: 15–25 years.
