The 500 TPD (Tons Per Day) Lime Rotary Kiln is a premium-grade thermal equipment specifically designed for medium-scale, high-activity lime production lines. It is widely used for calcining limestone, dolomite, and other calcium-rich minerals to produce high-quality quicklime, which is essential for metallurgy, chemical processing, environmental protection, and construction industries.

This 500 TPD system is engineered to deliver high activity lime with low residual carbon dioxide, balancing moderate initial capital investment with top-tier operational efficiency and structural reliability.

Working Principle

The operation of the 500 TPD lime rotary kiln is a continuous calcination process based on counter-current heat transfer between hot gas and solid materials:

  1. Limestone Feeding: Sized raw limestone is first fed into a vertical preheater located at the kiln tail. The limestone utilizes the high-temperature waste gas discharged from the kiln to achieve pre-heating and initial surface decomposition. The preheated limestone is then uniformly pushed into the higher end of the inclined rotary kiln.

  2. Calcination and Movement: The kiln shell is installed at an incline of about 3.5 percent to 4 percent and rotates slowly, driven by the motor system. As the kiln turns, the limestone rolls and tumbles along the inner wall, moving gradually from the higher tail end to the lower head end due to gravity.

  3. Thermal Reaction: Fuel such as natural gas, pulverized coal, or gasified fuel is injected through the burner pipe at the kiln head, creating a stable, long radiant flame. The limestone absorbs heat through radiation, convection, and conduction. As the material passes through the calcining zone at temperatures between 1050 and 1200 degrees Celsius, calcium carbonate decomposes into calcium oxide (quicklime) and releases carbon dioxide gas.

  4. Quicklime Discharge: The completely calcined active lime is discharged from the lower end of the kiln directly into a vertical cooler. Cold air is blown into the cooler to cool the lime to a safe handling temperature while simultaneously being preheated into secondary combustion air, which enters the kiln to maximize energy efficiency.

High Activity and Low Residual CO2: The rolling motion inside the rotary kiln ensures uniform heating of every limestone particle. This eliminates over-burning and under-burning, producing active lime with an activity level typically exceeding 360 milliliters, and a residual carbon dioxide content below 2 percent.

Energy Conservation with Vertical Preheater and Cooler: By pairing the 500 TPD rotary kiln with a vertical preheater and a vertical cooler, the system fully utilizes waste heat. The exhaust gas temperature at the preheater exit is significantly reduced, dramatically lowering overall fuel consumption.

Precise Temperature and Speed Control: The kiln is equipped with a variable frequency drive system for smooth speed adjustment. Integrated with an advanced automated control system, operators can precisely manage the thermal profile, kiln rotational speed, and feeding rate to maintain consistent product quality despite variations in raw material size.

Advanced Sealing and Environmental Protection: To minimize heat loss and environmental impact, the kiln head and tail feature reliable mechanical contact or scale-type seals. This minimizes cold air leakage and negative pressure fluctuations, working seamlessly with baghouse dust collectors to meet stringent environmental emission standards.

Heavy-Duty Structural Reliability: The kiln shell is manufactured from high-strength carbon steel plates optimized for thermal stresses. The support system features premium alloy forged steel rollers and tires with a hydraulic thrust roller assembly, ensuring balanced weight distribution, minimal mechanical friction, and a long service life for the internal refractory lining.
