Product Introduction
The 500 TPD (Tons Per Day) Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Rotary Kiln is a large-scale, highly reliable waste-to-energy (WtE) and volume-reduction thermal system designed for urban environmental management. Municipal solid waste is highly heterogeneous, containing a diverse and unpredictable mixture of plastics, organic matter, paper, textiles, and moisture, which presents significant challenges for traditional grate incinerators.
This 500 TPD rotary kiln system is specifically engineered to handle unsorted or coarsely shredded municipal waste. By providing continuous agitation and extreme thermal exposure, it achieves up to a 90 percent reduction in waste volume and a 75 percent reduction in weight. It effectively neutralizes all pathogens and organic pollutants while allowing modern cities to recover thermal energy for electricity generation or district heating, turning urban waste into a valuable resource.
Working Principle
The operation of the 500 TPD municipal solid waste rotary kiln utilizes high-temperature mass thermal destruction combined with mechanical tumbling:
Waste Feeding and Sorting: MSW is deposited into a storage bunker, mixed for homogeneity, and then transferred via a crane into the kiln's feeding hopper. It is continuously pushed into the higher end of the kiln (the kiln tail) through a heavy-duty hydraulic ram feeder or an air-locked screw conveyor.
Continuous Tumbling and Mass Transfer: The massive kiln shell is installed at a slight incline of 3.5 percent to 4 percent and rotates slowly. The slow, steady rotation continuously tumbles the waste pile, breaking open compressed garbage bags and ensuring that moisture-rich waste is brought to the surface. As the waste tumbles, it moves progressively downward toward the lower end, known as the kiln head.
Drying, Pyrolysis, and Complete Incineration: Fueled by auxiliary burners and sustained by the calorific value of the waste itself, internal temperatures are strictly maintained between 850 and 1000 degrees Celsius. The MSW moves through consecutive zones of drying, degassing/pyrolysis, and final blazing combustion. The continuous tumbling action ensures that oxygen interacts perfectly with all layers of the waste bed, achieving near-complete burnout.
Slag Discharge and Energy Recovery: The completely sterile, non-hazardous bottom ash and molten slag are discharged from the lower end into a water-quench extractor, where they are cooled and processed to recover ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The high-temperature flue gases exit the system and flow into a waste heat recovery boiler to generate high-pressure steam for steam turbines.

Exceptional Material Adaptability without Pre-sorting: Unlike traditional moving grate incinerators that struggle with oversized, sticky, or highly variable waste compositions, the rotary kiln can seamlessly process heterogeneous MSW, including high-moisture organic kitchen waste and high-calorific plastics, without risk of clogging.
Superior Burnout Rate and Total Pathogen Elimination: The physical rolling motion inside the kiln guarantees that all waste elements achieve an identical residence time at high temperatures. This results in an exceptionally low loss-on-ignition (LOI) in the bottom ash, completely eliminating odors, bacteria, and hazardous organic residues.
Heavy Duty Internal Architecture and Scale Prevention: Municipal waste can form sticky slag when melted. The internal lining of this kiln is engineered with specialized anti-scaling, high-alumina, or silicon carbide refractory materials. It can also feature automated mechanical descaling devices or internal configurations that prevent slag buildup on the walls, ensuring continuous 24/7 operation.
Advanced Atmosphere Control and Low NOx Generation: The system incorporates a highly precise primary and secondary air injection network. By controlling the oxygen distribution along the length of the kiln, it optimizes combustion efficiency while minimizing the formation of thermal nitrogen oxides, reducing the burden on downstream gas cleanup systems.
Flawless Environmental Sealing and Containment: Due to the high volume of volatile gases and potential odors associated with MSW, the kiln head and tail utilize high-integrity mechanical spring-loaded or graphite seals. The entire system is kept under constant negative pressure, guaranteeing zero fugitive emissions and ensuring full compliance with international clean air and environmental standards.
