ZG40Ni35Cr26Si2 ≈ HP40 (standard type, without Nb) is the most commonly used high-nickel-chromium-silicon austenitic centrifugal cast tube in the radiation section of ethylene cracking furnaces. It is designed for long-term use at 1100℃, with resistance to carburization, coking, and thermal shock, and offers high cost performance.

1. Basic information


National standard: ZG40Ni35Cr26Si2 (often abbreviated as ZG40Ni35Cr26)


American standard: ASTM A297 HP (J95705)


German standard: GX40NiCrSi35-26 / 1.4857


Process: Centrifugal casting (fine grain size, uniform wall thickness, fewer defects)


Implementations: GB/T 8492-2014, SH/T 3087-2017, HG/T 2601-2011


II. Chemical Composition (wt%, Typical / Range)


C: 0.35–0.45 (≈0.40) → carbide strengthening, creep resistance


Ni: 34–37 (≈35) → stable austenite, resistant to thermal shock / fatigue


Cr: 25–28 (≈26) → oxidation resistance, sulfuration resistance, carburization resistance


Si: 1.5–2.5 (≈2.0) → dense SiO₂+Cr₂O₃ film, resistant to coking


Mn≤1.5;P≤0.04;S≤0.03


Difference: Without Nb; with approximately 1% Nb, it is ZG40Ni35Cr26Si2Nb1 (HP40‑Nb), which has higher high-temperature strength and higher price


III. Core Performance (centrifugally cast tube, solid solution state)


1. Temperature capability


Continuous: 1100–1150℃ (100–150℃ higher than HK40)


Short-term: 1250℃


Operating conditions: 900–1150℃, 0.1–3MPa, hydrocarbon cracking, sulfur content, frequent start-stop


2. Mechanical properties (at room temperature)


Tensile strength: ≥650MPa


Yield strength: ≥300MPa


Elongation: ≥20%


1000℃: High endurance strength, far superior creep resistance to HK403. Corrosion resistance / carburizing resistance


Oxidation rate:


Impermeability to carburization: extremely strong, no embrittlement over a long period, and the inner wall is resistant to coking


Sulfur resistance (H₂S≤3%): Corrosion rate **≤0.03mm / year **


4. Physics / Organization


Density: 7.85g/cm³


Microstructure: single-phase austenite + eutectic carbide, without phase transformation, with good thermal stability


IV. Common specifications of cracking furnace tubes (centrifugally cast tubes)


Outer diameter: φ60~φ180mm (mainstream φ102/φ114/φ127)


Wall thickness: 8–16mm (commonly used 10/12/14mm)


Length: 3–6m (cut-to-length)


Forms: straight tube, U-bend, pigtail tube, reducer


V. Typical Applications


Ethylene cracking furnace: radiation section tubes (core), quench tubes, transition section tubes


Hydrogen production reformer: reformer tubes, manifold tubes


Heating furnace: radiation section/convection section tubes, furnace rollers


VI. Heat treatment (as delivered)


Solution treatment: Heat at 1150–1200℃ for 2–4 hours, then air cool → dissolve carbides, achieve uniform microstructure


No stabilization required (HP40-Nb requires stabilization at 850–900℃)


VII. Difference from ZG45Ni35Cr26 (HP40 old standard)


ZG40Ni35Cr26Si2: C ≈ 0.40, Si ≈ 2.0, a mainstream new standard, with better resistance to coking


ZG45Ni35Cr26: C ≈ 0.45, Si ≈ 1.0, old standard, slightly higher strength, slightly weaker resistance to coking
