Shipbuilding Steel Plate

1. Basic Definition

Shipbuilding steel plate is hot rolled medium and heavy plate certified by major classification societies, specially used for ship hulls and offshore engineering structures. It complies with Chinese standard GB 712-2011 Structural Steels for Ships and Offshore Installations. Different from ordinary carbon steel, it features outstanding low-temperature toughness, weldability, seawater corrosion resistance and fatigue impact resistance.

Core Performance Requirements

  1. Low-temperature impact toughness: Resist brittle fracture under low sea temperatures and ice collision, classified into 4 temperature grades: A/D/E/F.

  2. Excellent weldability: Strictly controlled carbon equivalent to support mass hull welding.

  3. High strength & ductility: Withstand alternating wave loads, hydrostatic pressure and grounding impact.

  4. Marine corrosion resistance: Resist salt fog and seawater electrochemical corrosion.

  5. Strict flaw detection: Ultrasonic testing before delivery to eliminate lamination and internal cracks.

2. Grade Classification (CCS China Classification Society System, Widely Used for Export)

(1) Normal Strength Ship Plate (Yield Strength ≥235MPa)

CCSA, CCSB, CCSD, CCSE

  • Grade A: Impact test at 0°C, for inland river & near-shore ordinary vessels

  • Grade B: Impact test at +20°C, for coastal bulk carriers and fishing boats

  • Grade D: Impact test at -20°C, for general ocean-going vessels

  • Grade E: Impact test at -40°C, for cold northern waters and large ocean-going ships

(2) High-Strength Ship Plate (Mainstream Export Grades)

Strength Grade Minimum Yield Strength Low-Temperature Impact Grade Application
Grade 32 ≥315MPa AH32 (0℃), DH32 (-20℃), EH32 (-40℃) Medium & small cargo ships, decks, bulkheads
Grade 36 ≥355MPa AH36, DH36, EH36 Container ships, oil tankers, bulk carriers (most common grade)
Grade 40 ≥390MPa AH40, DH40, EH40, FH40 (-60℃) Large container vessels, icebreakers, polar offshore platforms

Code Explanation:

  • A/D/E/F: Impact test temperature 0℃ / -20℃ / -40℃ / -60℃

  • H: High Strength

  • Prefix CCS: Certified by China Classification Society; ABS, BV, DNV, LR and other international classification society certificates available for export.

3. Standard Specifications

  • Thickness: 6mm – 150mm; customized ultra-thick plate up to 200mm

  • Width: 1500mm – 3000mm, max. 4800mm

  • Length: 3000mm – 12000mm, CNC cutting to custom lengths available

  • Delivery Condition: As hot rolled, shot blasted with anti-corrosion primer, normalized / controlled rolling

  • Supplementary Inspection: Impact test, UT ultrasonic flaw detection, Z-direction performance (Z15/Z25/Z35)

4. Main Applications

  1. Ship Hulls: Bottom shell plate, side shell plate, strength deck, bulkhead, hatch coaming, fore & aft impact-resistant parts

  2. Vessel Types: Bulk carriers, container ships, oil tankers, fishing boats, engineering vessels, icebreakers, LNG carriers

  3. Offshore Engineering: Offshore drilling platforms, wind power jackets, floating structures, trestles, oil storage tanks

5. Export Supply Information

  1. Certification: Original mill certificates issued by CCS, ABS, BV, DNV, LR available

  2. Lead Time

  • Standard spot sizes: 5–7 days, shipped from Tianjin Port / Qingdao Port

  • Custom mill order for non-standard sizes: 25–40 days

  • Trade Terms: FOB, CIF, CFR acceptable

  • Packing: Standard sea freight bundling with steel strips and anti-rust film, suitable for long-distance ocean transportation

  • Payment Terms: 30% TT advance payment, 70% balance against copy of Bill of Lading

  • 6. Quick Grade Selection Guide

    1. Inland small vessels & warm sea areas → CCSA / CCSB

    2. General ocean-going cargo ships → DH36

    3. Cold northern sea areas & heavy-load large vessels → EH36

    4. Arctic routes, icebreakers & polar offshore projects → FH36 / FH40
