Testing Range
This instrument covers measurement, in poises, of the apparent viscosity of lubricating greases in the temperature range from -54 °C to 38 °C (-65 °F to 100 °F). Measurements are limited to the range from 25 P to 100 000 P at 0.1 s-1 and 1P to 100 P at 15 000 s-1.
At very low temperatures the shear rate range may be reduced because of the great force required to force grease through the smaller capillaries.
Instrument Introduction
The instrument mainly measures the apparent viscosity of lubricating grease and is used to predict the pressure drop in the lubricating grease system under the specified temperature and steady flow state.A floating piston driven by a hydraulic system forces the sample through the capillary tube. The apparent viscosity was calculated from the pre-determined flow rate and the force exerted in the system according to the Poiseuille’s equation. Eight capillaries of different diameters and two pump speeds were used to determine the apparent viscosity at 16 shear rates, and the results of the experiments were expressed as double logarithmic curves of apparent viscosity versus shear rate.
