In electroplating applications, the required coating metal is dissolved in the electrolyte, the plated metal substrate is used as a negative electrode, and the anode is used as a positive electrode, which forms a complete current transfer cycle. The chemical reaction that occurs simultaneously with electroplating in the electroplating tank is the precipitation of oxygen on the anode surface.
Compared with non-inert anodes such as graphite, titanium anodes have the advantage of maintaining a stable distance between anode and anode (electrode to electrode distance) throughout their service life. Graphite anodes dissolve gradually during use, increasing the distance between electrodes, while inert titanium anodes ensure stable voltage and product quality. Due to the catalytic properties of the page, the exchange current density on the surface of the electrode is bigger, the oxygen precipitation is low overpotential, and specializes in the use of the special process in the titanium surface made of the microstructure of the oxide film, the maximum in the unit on the area of the electrode active surface area, therefore particularly suitable for high speed high current density of electroplating production.
In addition to titanium and graphite anodes, lead anodes can also be used in this field. However, when lead anode dissolves, its reactants have a negative impact on the environment. These problems can be avoided by using titanium anodes. The anodes also save energy because they operate at a lower voltage.
Another advantage of using titanium anodes is that titanium substrates can be reused. Anodized aluminum foil is a material commonly used in the lithographic printing industry when the titanium anode coating reaches its useful life. It works like an electroplating process, with a thin layer of metal on top of the base metal. By placing aluminum in an anodic state, its surface oxidizes. After the anodizing (oxidation) process, the aluminum's surface can bond better to the photosensitive coatings needed in the lithography industry.
In the electroplated metal industry, anodes are used to electroplate a variety of substrates, from small batch production of jewelry to continuous large-scale production of electroplated steel plates.
