This chapter deals with the sealing of fluids on rotating shafts, a delicate problem that now finds its almost universal solution in the application of a product known as a "rotary shaft seal". The entire discussion is destined for designers and users, as a valid support and guidance for selecting the most appropriate type for their specific uses. Metric rotary shaft seal in nitrile rubber comes complete with a shaft garter spring.
Also known as an oil seal, shaftseal, or lip seal. Its function is to exclude dust, dirt, water or any other contaminant on one side whilst retaining lubricant on the other. Generally it has been developed as a means of protecting the bearings of rotating shafts.
The basic operation of a shaft seal has the flexible lip held against the rotating part (usually the shaft) whilst the casing (or O.D.) is pressed into the housing or bore holding the seal in place. The sealing lip needs some form of lubrication to avoid overheating and are usually energized by means of a garter spring.
Materials used for the sealing lip
The material used for the sealing lip is a mixture of one or more basic elastomers and a variety of ingredients, such as: reinforcing fillers, plasticizers, antioxidants, accelerators, etc. This is for the purpose of providing it with certain properties, such as:
- Compatibility with the fluid contacted
- High degree of elasticity
- Wear resistance
- Low friction coefficient.
A familiarity with the materials is essential to help the designing specialist make the proper selection of the most suitable materials for the application of interest. The main qualities of the compounds ROLF uses for producing its shaft seals are:
