Furan resin refers to the general term for resins produced from furfuryl alcohol and furfural with a furan ring. It solidifies into an insoluble and infusible solid under the action of strong acids. There are various types, such as urea-formaldehyde modified furan resin, phenolic modified furan resin, ketone-aldehyde modified furan resin, urea-formaldehyde phenolic modified furan resin, etc. Furfuryl alcohol resin is made by adding urea-formaldehyde resin or phenolic resin precondensate to furfuryl alcohol as the main component. It appears as a brown liquid, with good heat resistance and water resistance, and extremely strong chemical corrosion resistance. It has excellent resistance to acids, alkalis, salts, and organic solutions, and is an excellent preservative. Furfuryl alcohol resin has high strength and is an excellent binder for wood, rubber, metal, ceramics, etc. It can also be used in the production of coatings. An important use of furfuryl alcohol resin is as a sand core binder in the casting process of the machinery industry, especially suitable for large-scale and high-volume machinery manufacturing, such as the production of automobiles, military equipment, internal combustion engines, diesel engines, sewing machines, etc. When used as a binder for casting sand cores, furfuryl alcohol resin has the following characteristics:fast curing speed, high strength at room temperature, and good collapsibility;resins with different nitrogen contents can be selected according to the carbon content of different castings;low gas evolution, high strength at high temperatures, moderate thermal expansion, high brittleness, low tendency to form pores, and high hygroscopicity. After being modified by adding urea, furfuryl alcohol resins with different nitrogen contents can be produced according to different requirements to meet the requirements of the casting processes of steel, cast iron, and other non-ferrous metals.
Performance and Function
Performance and Application of Furan Resin--Uncured furan resin has good miscibility with many thermoplastic and thermosetting resins, so it can be mixed with epoxy resinor phenolic resin for modification. The cured furan resin is resistant to the erosion of strong acids (except for strongly oxidizing nitric acid and sulfuric acid), strong alkalis, and organic solvents, and remains stable at high temperatures. Furan resin is mainly used as various materials resistant to chemical corrosion and high temperatures.
(1)The chemical-resistant material, furan resin, can be used to prepare anti-corrosion mortar, and is used as the lining of chemical equipment or other anti-corrosion materials.
(2)The heat resistance of furan glass fiber reinforced composite material, a heat-resistant material, is higher than that of general phenolic glass fiber reinforced composite material. It can usually be used for a long time at around150℃.
(3)Mixing and modifying with epoxy resin or phenolic resin: When furan resin is mixed and used with epoxy resin or phenolic resin, the mechanical properties and the process performance during preparation of furan glass fiber reinforced composite material can be improved. This type of composite material has been widely used to prepare chemical equipment such as the stirring devices, storage tanks and pipelines of chemical reactors.
(4)Furan resin has high industrial value and is widely used in the metallurgical casting industry for molding. For example, in the production of many auto parts, plumbing sanitary ware and tire molds, after using the furan resin sand process for molding, good economic results are obtained.
