1. Product Overview

Silicon steel, also known as electrical steel, is a soft magnetic iron-silicon alloy with low carbon content. Its silicon content ranges from 0.5% to 4.8% and carbon content ≤0.003%. It is the most widely used core material for electromagnetic equipment, accounting for over 80% of all soft magnetic materials globally.

Adding silicon to steel increases resistivity and magnetic permeability, significantly reducing core loss (heat loss under alternating magnetic field), coercivity and magnetic aging. Featuring precise dimensional tolerance, flat surface and excellent stamping performance, silicon steel is widely adopted to manufacture iron cores for power systems, new energy equipment, home appliances and industrial control devices.

2. Main Product Categories & Characteristics

2.1 Cold Rolled Grain Oriented Silicon Steel (CRGO / GOES, for transformers)

  1. Composition & Production ProcessWith approximately 3% silicon content, it is produced via hot rolling, normalization, double cold rolling, high-temperature grain-oriented annealing and insulating coating treatment. Grains are aligned uniformly along the rolling direction, resulting in strong magnetic anisotropy, with optimal magnetic performance only along the rolling direction.

  2. Core AdvantagesUltra-low core loss along rolling direction, high magnetic induction (B₈ ≥ 1.89T), low magnetostriction and low noise. Core loss in transverse direction is about 3 times that of rolling direction. Lamination must follow the rolling direction during cutting.

  3. Standard Thickness0.23mm, 0.27mm, 0.30mm, 0.35mm; ultra-thin 0.05mm / 0.10mm for high-frequency miniature transformers.

  4. Common Grades23SQGD085, 27SQGD090, 30Q120, 35Q135, Hi-B high magnetic induction laser scribed grain oriented silicon steel.

  5. Application ScenariosPower main transformers, distribution transformers, reactors, instrument transformers, UHV converter transformers, iron cores for photovoltaic and energy storage inverters.

2.2 Cold Rolled Non-Grain Oriented Silicon Steel (CRNGO / NGOES, for motors)

  1. Composition & Production ProcessSilicon content ranges from 0.8% to 4.5% with randomly distributed grains. Magnetic properties are uniform in all directions without obvious anisotropy, allowing stable performance after cutting at any angle.

  2. Core AdvantagesIsotropic magnetic property, superior stamping performance and high stacking factor. It is classified into low, medium and high grades; smaller grade figures represent lower core loss and higher energy efficiency.

  3. Standard Thickness0.35mm, 0.50mm (general industrial use); 0.20mm / 0.25mm ultra-thin for high-speed new energy motors.

  4. Common Grades

  • High grade (new energy vehicle motors): 35W230, 35W250, 35W270

  • Medium grade (industrial motors & fans): 50W300, 50W400, 50W470

  • Regular grade (home appliance compressors): 50W600, 65W800

  1. Application ScenariosNew energy vehicle drive motors, wind power generators, servo motors, water pump & fan motors, air conditioner compressors, UPS inductors, small and medium-sized power frequency transformers.

2.3 Hot Rolled Silicon Steel (Phased out, only for old equipment)

Thickness 0.5mm / 1.0mm, featuring large thickness tolerance, high core loss and high energy consumption. Its production and procurement are gradually restricted domestically, not recommended for new projects.

3. Core Technical Performance Indicators

3.1 Magnetic Properties (Key Standards for Purchase Inspection)

  • Core Loss P: P1.7/50 (grain oriented steel, loss in W/kg under 1.7T, 50Hz); P1.5/50 (non-grain oriented steel, loss in W/kg under 1.5T, 50Hz). Lower value means higher energy efficiency.

  • Magnetic Induction B: B8 for grain oriented steel, B50 for non-grain oriented steel. Higher value enables smaller core size and higher power density.

  • Stacking Factor: ≥0.95, directly determines the effective magnetic cross-sectional area of iron core.

  • Magnetic Aging: Minimal attenuation of magnetic performance during long-term service, suitable for equipment with continuous long-hour operation.

3.2 Mechanical Machinability

  • Thickness Tolerance: ±0.003 ~ ±0.005mm, flat sheet without wave edge or warpage.

  • Stamping Performance: Moderate hardness, no burr or cracking during high-speed stamping, compatible with laser cutting and die cutting.

  • Tensile Strength: 380 ~ 480MPa, stable bending and coiling processing.

3.3 Insulating Coating Performance

Double-sided / single-sided factory insulating coating (Type C2 / C3 / C4 / C6):

  • Insulation resistance ≥50Ω·cm², resistant to short-time high temperature up to 200℃.

  • Grade 0 coating adhesion, no peeling during stamping and lamination.

  • Dielectric withstand voltage 800V/μm, preventing inter-sheet short circuit and overheating.

4. Applicable Standards

  1. Chinese National Standards: GB/T 2521.1-2016 (Non-Grain Oriented), GB/T 2521.2-2016 (Grain Oriented), Baosteel Enterprise Standard Q/BQB 480
