Detailed Description of Deformed Steel Bars

1. Product Introduction

Deformed steel bar (Hot-rolled Ribbed Bar, abbreviated as HRB) is a long steel product with two longitudinal ribs and evenly distributed transverse ribs on the surface. It has a circular cross-section, and the crescent-shaped transverse ribs do not intersect with longitudinal ribs. It can significantly enhance the bonding force with concrete and prevent relative slippage, serving as the main load-bearing framework for reinforced concrete structures.

2. Executive Standard

  • National Standard of China: GB 1499.2-2024 (Implemented on September 25, 2024, replacing GB/T 1499.2-2018)

  • Scope of application: Hot-rolled ribbed bars for reinforced concrete structures, including ordinary hot-rolled bars, fine-grain hot-rolled bars and seismic steel bars.

3. Material & Chemical Composition

  • Raw material: Carbon structural steel / Low-alloy structural steel (e.g. 20MnSi, 20MnSiV, 20MnSiNb)

  • Typical chemical composition (wt%):

    • Carbon (C): 0.20–0.40

    • Silicon (Si): 0.40–0.80

    • Manganese (Mn): 1.20–1.60

    • Phosphorus (P): ≤0.045, Sulfur (S): ≤0.045 (Strict control of impurities)

4. Grade & Mechanical Properties

The grade is marked as HRB plus the minimum yield strength. The letter E stands for seismic-resistant type (e.g. HRB400E).

  • Standard fixed length: 9m, 12m (domestic standard); customized length from 6m to 12m is available.

  • Coiled deformed bar: Diameter Φ6–Φ12, coil weight: 2–2.5 tons approximately.

  • Weight tolerance (In accordance with GB 1499.2-2024):

    • Φ6–Φ12: ±5.5%

    • Φ14–Φ20: ±4.5%

    • Φ22–Φ50: ±3.5%

    6. Surface Quality Requirements

    • Surface: Free from cracks, seams, folds and excessive oxide scale; flat and burr-free ends.

    • Ribs: Even and clear transverse ribs without missing or broken ribs; symmetrical longitudinal ribs with uniform height.

    • Straightness: Bending deflection per meter ≤ 4mm; total bending deflection ≤ 0.4% of the total length.

    7. Production Process

    1. Steelmaking: Molten iron → Converter / Electric furnace → Refining → Qualified steel billet (strict composition control)

    2. Rolling: Steel billet heated to 1100–1250℃ → Rough rolling → Intermediate rolling → Finish rolling → Rib forming

    3. Cooling: Air cooling / Controlled cooling (for fine-grain steel) → Cutting to fixed length → Bundling → Inspection & Warehousing

    4. Standard for seismic bars: HRB400E / HRB500E shall meet the requirements: Strength ratio ≥1.25, Yield ratio ≤1.30, Total elongation at maximum force ≥9%

    8. Main Applications

    • Construction industry: Beams, columns, floor slabs, foundations, shear walls and frame structures of buildings.

    • Municipal engineering: Bridges, culverts, tunnels, highway & railway subgrades, flood control projects.

    • Industrial projects: Factory buildings, equipment foundations, large storage tanks, ports and wharves.

    9. Packaging & Delivery

    • Packaging: Delivered in bundles. Each bundle weighs 2–5 tons with firm binding. Metal tags are attached to mark grade, size, heat number and production date.

    • Delivery condition: Hot rolled state with slight surface rust allowed.

    • Lead Time: 5-7 working days
