Steel Wire Product Detailed Description
Steel wire is manufactured by cold drawing using hot-rolled wire rod as raw material. It is one of the four major steel products including plate, pipe, section and wire. Featuring high strength, good toughness, diverse specifications and strong adaptability, it is widely used in industries such as manufacturing, construction, machinery and light industry.
1. Main Materials and Chemical Composition
1.1 Main Materials
Low carbon steel wire: Q195, Q235, SWRM6-10. Carbon content ≤ 0.25%. It has low hardness and good ductility for easy processing.
Medium and high carbon steel wire: 45#, 65#, 70#, SWRH42A-82B, 65Mn. Carbon content ranges from 0.4% to 1.0%. It delivers high strength and excellent elasticity, ideal for springs and steel wire ropes.
Alloy steel wire: 60Si2Mn, 50CrVA. Alloy elements like manganese, silicon and chromium are added to improve fatigue resistance and corrosion resistance.
1.2 Key Composition Standards
Carbon (C): 0.4%-1.0%, Manganese (Mn): 0.3%-1.0%, Silicon (Si): 0.1%-0.3%. Impurities including Phosphorus (P) and Sulfur (S) are controlled below 0.045% to balance toughness and strength.
2. Product Classification
2.1 By Cross-section Shape
Round steel wire: The most common type with diameter from 0.1mm to 10mm, suitable for most application scenarios.
Special-shaped steel wire: Square, rectangular, triangular, oval, flat, trapezoidal, Z-shaped and other profiles, applied to special structures such as springs and sealing parts.
2.2 By Diameter Specification
Extra fine: <0.1mm (precision instruments, electronics)
Fine: 0.1-0.5mm (textile industry, pin making)
Medium fine: 0.5-1.5mm (nail making, wire mesh)
Medium: 1.5-3.0mm (springs, binding)
Thick: 3.0-6.0mm (steel wire ropes, construction)
Extra thick: 6.0-8.0mm (prestressed engineering)
Super thick: >8.0mm (heavy machinery, bridges)
2.3 By Tensile Strength
Low strength: <390MPa (soft texture, easy to bend)
Lower strength: 390-785MPa (general binding and packaging)
Normal strength: 785-1225MPa (nail making, wire mesh)
Higher strength: 1225-1960MPa (springs, steel wire ropes)
High strength: 1960-3135MPa (prestressed components, bridge cables)
Ultra-high strength: >3135MPa (aviation, high-end machinery)
2.4 By Surface Treatment
Bright steel wire: Without coating, presenting natural metallic luster. It is cost-effective but prone to rust, for use in dry environments.
Galvanized steel wire: Hot-dip galvanized (thick zinc coating, 60-120g/㎡, superior corrosion resistance) and electro-galvanized (bright surface with thin zinc coating).
Copper-plated steel wire: Optimizes weldability and adhesion, used for rubber hoses and tire cords.
PVC/PE coated steel wire: Featured with corrosion resistance and insulation, widely used for fences and garden facilities.
2.5 By Application
General purpose: Nail making, wire mesh, packaging binding, welding wire core.
Spring steel wire: Cold-drawn spring wire and oil-tempered spring wire for various spring production.
Rope-making steel wire: Twisted into steel wire ropes and steel strands for hoisting, traction and bridge projects.
Construction steel wire: Binding wire, prestressed steel wire and reinforcement cage wire.
Electrical steel wire: Aluminum conductor steel reinforced, cable armoring, overhead communication lines.
Textile steel wire: Card clothing, heddle wire and brush wire.
3. Production Process
Raw material pretreatment: Hot-rolled wire rod (Φ6.5-Φ12mm) is pickled, phosphated and saponified to remove oxide scale and enhance lubrication.
Cold drawing: The wire is drawn step by step through wire drawing machines to reach target diameter, with improved strength and surface finish.
Heat treatment (optional): Annealing for softening and easy processing; oil tempering to enhance elasticity and fatigue resistance; surface treatment including galvanizing and copper plating.
Finishing and packaging: Straightening, cutting and inspection, then packed into coils or bundles as required.
4. Common Specifications
