Detailed Description of Petroleum Pipes
Petroleum pipes (OCTG) are core special pipes for oil and gas exploration and development, mainly divided into three major categories: Casing, Tubing and Drill Pipe. They comply with API 5CT/5B, SY/T 6194 and other standards, featuring high strength, high toughness and excellent corrosion resistance, suitable for complex underground environments such as high temperature, high pressure and sulfur-containing formations.
1. Product Classification and Main Uses
1.1 Casing
Function: Support well wall, isolate strata, prevent well collapse and environmental pollution, it is a one-time consumable, accounting for more than 70% of total oil country tubular goods consumption.
Classification:
Conductor Pipe: Outermost layer, fix wellhead and prevent shallow formation collapse.
Surface Casing: Seal shallow water layers and protect fresh water resources.
Intermediate Casing: Adapt to complex strata with high pressure and lost circulation.
Production Casing: Reach oil and gas reservoirs directly, serve as permanent flow channels.
Specification: Outer diameter 114.3–508 mm, wall thickness 5–15.9 mm, length 5.5–22.23 m.
Steel Grade: H40, J55, K55, N80, L80, C90, T95, P110, Q125, etc.
1.2 Tubing
Function: Suspended inside casing, transport oil and gas from underground to ground, reusable.
Specification: Outer diameter 48.36–114.3 mm, wall thickness 4.83–9.52 mm, length 6–12.5 m.
Common Steel Grade: N80, L80, C90, T95, P110.
1.3 Drill Pipe
Function: Connect ground drilling rig and drill bit, transmit torque and drilling fluid, core component for drilling operation.
Structure: Pipe body + upset joint connected by friction welding.
Specification: Outer diameter 60.3–168.3 mm, length 8–12 m, steel grade G105, S135, etc.
2. Material and Mechanical Properties
2.1 Common Steel Grades and Characteristics
J55/K55: Low strength, applied in shallow wells and low-pressure wells with cost advantage.
N80: Medium-high strength, universal type for medium-depth conventional oil wells.
L80: High strength, excellent hydrogen sulfide stress corrosion resistance, ideal for sulfur-containing wells.
C90/T95: Ultra-high strength with high collapse resistance, suitable for deep wells and ultra-deep wells.
P110: Super high strength, outstanding compression and burst resistance for high-pressure deep wells.
2.2 Typical Chemical Composition
C: 0.24–0.35%, Mn: 1.0–1.6%, Cr: 0.5–1.2%, Mo: 0.15–0.3%, Sulfur ≤0.01%, Phosphorus ≤0.02%. Low sulfur and low phosphorus design effectively avoid crack generation.
2.3 Core Mechanical Properties (API 5CT Standard)
Yield Strength: N80≥552 MPa, P110≥758 MPa
Tensile Strength: N80≥689 MPa, P110≥862 MPa
Impact Toughness: V-notch impact energy ≥27 J (-20℃)
Hardness: ≤235 HB (L80 anti-sulfur steel)
3. Manufacturing Technology
Seamless Pipe (Mainstream): Billet heating → piercing → hot rolling → sizing → straightening → heat treatment (normalizing & quenching and tempering) → thread processing → non-destructive testing → anti-corrosion treatment → finished product storage
HFW Welded Pipe: Steel strip forming → high-frequency welding → burr removing → heat treatment → thread processing → inspection → anti-corrosion → warehousing, cost-effective for shallow well projects
Key Processes:
Heat treatment: Quenching and tempering process to balance strength and toughness
Thread processing: API standard round thread, buttress thread and special airtight thread
NDT: Ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle testing and eddy current testing to eliminate internal and external defects

International Standards: API SPEC 5CT, API SPEC 5B, ISO 11960
Domestic Standards: SY/T 6194, GB/T 19830
Pipeline Pipe Standard: API 5L, GB/T 9711
5. Special Product Series
Sulfur Resistant Series: L80-13Cr, Super 13Cr, resist H₂S and CO₂ corrosion for high sulfur gas fields
High Collapse Resistance Series: Thick wall design plus special heat treatment, fit for deep wells and salt formations
Premium Connection Series: BGT, VAM, Hydril type thread with excellent air tightness and torsion resistance for high-pressure gas wells
Non-coupling Casing: Reduce outer diameter, applicable to slim hole drilling
6. Surface Treatment and Anti-corrosion
Surface Condition: Black oxide skin for seamless pipes, smooth surface for welded pipes with chamfered pipe ends
External Anti-corrosion: Coal tar epoxy coating, 3PE three-layer polyethylene coating for buried pipeline anti-corrosion
Internal Anti-corrosion: Epoxy resin coating to prevent scaling and medium corrosion
Thread Protection: Apply special thread compound to prevent thread sticking, equip with thread protectors
7. Packaging and Transportation
Packaging: Bundled packing, equipped with end protectors, marked with specification, steel grade, batch number and execution standard
Transportation: Keep dry, avoid collision and damage to threads, forbid rough handling
Storage: Place on heightening support in dry and ventilated warehouse, keep away from corrosive substances
8. Quality Inspection and Acceptance
Material certification including heat number, chemical composition and mechanical performance data
Dimensional inspection for outer diameter, wall thickness, length and thread parameters
Complete non-destructive testing report without unqualified defects
Visual inspection to ensure no crack, dent and severe rust
9. Application Scope
Onshore Oilfield: Shallow wells to ultra-deep wells under conventional, sulfur-containing and high-pressure working conditions
Offshore Oilfield: Offshore platform deep-water wells with severe corrosive environment
Shale Gas & Coal Bed Gas: Horizontal wells and staged fracturing engineering
Geothermal Wells: High temperature resistant special petroleum pipes for geothermal exploitation
