Detailed Description of Angle Steel Products
Angle steel, commonly known as angle iron, is hot-rolled or cold-formed section steel with an L-shaped cross-section and a 90° included angle on both sides. It is divided into equal angle steel and unequal angle steel. Featuring stable structure, easy welding and installation, high strength and low cost, it is widely used in construction, bridges, machinery, electric power and other industries.
1. Product Classification
1.1 Classification by Cross-section Shape
Equal Angle Steel: Equal width on both sides, marked as "∠Side Width×Side Width×Thickness" (e.g. ∠50×50×5mm). Model numbers are numbered by centimeter of side width (No.2-No.20). It features uniform stress and good symmetry with the largest consumption volume.
Unequal Angle Steel: Unequal width on two sides, marked as "∠Long Side×Short Side×Thickness" (e.g. ∠63×40×5mm) with models ranging from 3.2/2# to 20/12.5#. It is suitable for special load-bearing scenarios and saves materials.
1.2 Classification by Production Process
Hot-rolled Angle Steel: Mainstream production process. Formed by rolling steel billets at around 1200℃ with inner fillet radius, high strength and good toughness, applicable for heavy structures such as buildings and bridges.
Cold-formed Angle Steel: Formed at normal temperature with uniform wall thickness, high surface finish and precise dimensions, mostly used for light structures like shelves and brackets.
1.3 Classification by Surface Treatment
Black Angle Steel (Raw Surface): Original hot-rolled surface with low cost, used for indoor dry environments.
Galvanized Angle Steel (Hot-dip/Cold-dip): Anti-rust and anti-corrosion, suitable for outdoor, humid and chemical environments to extend service life.
Spray-painted Angle Steel: Coated with anti-corrosion paint for beauty and rust prevention, applied for decorative structures.
2. Specifications and Technical Parameters
2.1 Specification Representation (Standard: GB/T 706-2016)
Equal Angle Steel: ∠Side Width×Side Width×Thickness (mm), e.g. ∠100×100×10
Unequal Angle Steel: ∠Long Side×Short Side×Thickness (mm), e.g. ∠160×100×14
Model Code: Indicated by side width in centimeters, e.g. No.5 angle steel refers to equal angle steel with 50mm side width.
2.2 Size Range
Equal Angle Steel: Side width 20-200mm, thickness 3-24mm, standard length 4-12m (custom lengths available)
Unequal Angle Steel: Long side 25-250mm, short side 16-160mm, thickness 3-20mm
2.3 Theoretical Weight (kg/m)
Calculation formula for equal angle steel:W=0.00785×Thickness×(2×Side Width−Thickness)Example: Theoretical weight of ∠50×50×5 is 3.73kg/m
3. Material Grade and Chemical Composition
3.1 Common Materials (National Standard)
Q235B: Ordinary carbon steel with yield strength of 235MPa, good toughness and easy welding, most widely used.
Q355B (Q345B): Low alloy steel with yield strength of 355MPa, high strength and low temperature resistance, used for heavy-load structures.
Q355NH: Weathering steel with excellent corrosion resistance, applied for long-term exposed outdoor structures.
3.2 Chemical Composition (wt%)
| Element | C | Mn | P | S |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Content | <0.22 | 0.30-0.65 | <0.060 | <0.060 |
4. Room-temperature Mechanical Properties
| Material Grade | Yield Strength (MPa) | Tensile Strength (MPa) | Elongation (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q235B | ≥235 | 370-500 | ≥26 |
| Q355B | ≥355 | 470-630 | ≥21 |
5. Executive Standards
Hot-rolled Angle Steel: GB/T 706-2016 Hot Rolled Section Steel
Cold-formed Angle Steel: GB/T 6723-2017 General Technical Requirements for Cold-formed Section Steel
Acceptance Specification: GB/T 2101-2017 Acceptance, Packaging, Marking and Quality Certificate for Section Steel
Material Standard: GB/T 700 Carbon Structural Steel, GB/T 1591 Low Alloy High Strength Structural Steel
6. Production Process
Heating: Heat steel billet to 1100-1250℃ for soft rolling
Rough Rolling: Preliminary rolling to form L-shaped section
Finish Rolling: Adjust dimensional accuracy, flatness, side thickness and angle
Cooling: Natural or controlled cooling to optimize mechanical performance
Straightening: Correct deformation to ensure straightness
Fixed-length Cutting: Cut into 4-12m fixed lengths with smooth end faces
Inspection & Packaging: Conduct dimension and surface inspection, mark specifications, bind and pack finished products
7. Main Applications
Angle steel can be assembled into various force-bearing components and connecting parts, widely used in:
Construction Engineering: Building beams, columns, frames, handrails, curtain wall brackets
Bridge Engineering: Bridge supports, truss structures, guardrails
Power & Communication: Transmission towers, base station brackets, cable trench supports
Machinery Manufacturing: Equipment frames, bases, brackets, hoisting machinery parts
Municipal Engineering: Street lamp brackets, guardrails, billboard frames
Warehousing & Logistics: Storage shelves, pallet brackets, warehouse partition frames
8. Quality Requirements and Acceptance Criteria
8.1 Surface Quality
Free from cracks, scabs, folds, inclusions and delamination
Depth of surface rust and pits shall not exceed negative tolerance of wall thickness
8.2 Dimensional Tolerance (GB/T 706-2016)
Side width deviation: ±1.0mm (side width ≤100mm)
Thickness deviation: ±0.4mm (thickness ≤10mm)
Angle deviation: ≤±1°, bending degree ≤3mm per meter
8.3 Acceptance Items

10. Selection Guidelines
Select specifications according to load: Choose Q355B and heavy thick-wall angle steel for heavy load; adopt Q235B and thin-wall type for light load
Select surface treatment by service environment: Hot-dip galvanized for outdoor and humid areas, black raw steel for indoor dry places, spray-painted type for decoration use
Select processing type by usage: Hot-rolled for heavy structures, cold-formed for light precision structures
Cost optimization: Prioritize equal angle steel under same load to reduce material waste
