Steel Wire Product Detailed Description
1. Product Overview
Steel Wire is one of the four major steel products (plate, pipe, section, wire). It is a linear product manufactured from hot-rolled wire rod through cold drawing, heat treatment and surface treatment processes.
2. Main Raw Materials
Carbon Steel: Carbon content 0.4%–1.0%, Manganese 0.3%–1.0%, Silicon 0.1%–0.3%, Phosphorus and Sulfur ≤ 0.045%.
Common Grades:
Low Carbon: Q235, SWRM6 (C ≤ 0.25%)
Medium Carbon: 45#, 55#, SWRH47A (C 0.25%–0.60%)
High Carbon: 60#, 70#, SWRH72A (C ≥ 0.60%)
3. Manufacturing Process
Raw Material Pretreatment: Wire rod pickling → Phosphating/Saponification → Drying.
Cold Drawing: Reduce diameter gradually to target size through cemented carbide dies at room temperature to enhance strength.
Heat Treatment:
Annealing: Soft state, easy for processing (such as binding wire).
Patenting: Strengthen and toughen high-carbon steel wire (for springs, steel wire ropes).
Surface Treatment:
Bright Finish (U): No coating.
Hot-Dip Galvanized: Thick zinc coating (40–120 g/m²), excellent corrosion resistance.
Electro-Galvanized: Thin zinc coating (10–60 g/m²), bright surface.
Copper/Nickel Plated: Improve rubber adhesion and weldability.
4. Product Classification (According to GB/T 341-2008)
By Cross-Section Shape:
Round Steel Wire: Most widely used.
Special-Shaped Steel Wire: Square, rectangular, triangular, elliptical, flat, trapezoidal, Z-shape, etc.
By Diameter (mm):
Extra Fine: <0.1
Relatively Fine: 0.1–0.5
Fine: 0.5–1.5
Medium: 1.5–3.0
Coarse: 3.0–6.0
Relatively Coarse: 6.0–8.0
Extra Coarse: >8.0
By Tensile Strength (MPa):
Low Strength: <390
Relatively Low Strength: 390–785
Normal Strength: 785–1225
Relatively High Strength: 1225–1960
High Strength: 1960–3135
Ultra-High Strength: >3135
By Application:
General Steel Wire: For nail making, wire mesh, packaging, welding electrodes.
Cold Heading Steel Wire: For rivets and screws.
Spring Steel Wire: For valve springs, tension devices.
Steel Wire for Rope: For hoisting, bridges, mining.
Prestressed Steel Wire: Reinforcement for concrete components.
Electrical Steel Wire: Overhead communication lines, cable cores.
5. Key Technical Parameters
Diameter Tolerance: Common ±0.02–±0.05 mm; precision grade up to ±0.005 mm.
Tensile Strength: 800–2000 MPa (depending on material grade and process).
Elongation: Soft state 10%–25%; hard state 2%–8%.
Coating Weight: Hot-dip galvanized ≥ 60 g/m²; electro-galvanized ≥ 20 g/m².
6. Common Specification Table
| Application | Grade | Diameter (mm) | Surface Treatment | Tensile Strength (MPa) |
