Galvanized Steel Pipe – Detailed Product Description

1. Product Overview

Galvanized steel pipe is a carbon steel pipe coated with a layer of zinc on the surface, featuring excellent anti-corrosion and rust-proof performance to greatly extend service life. It is mainly divided into hot-dip galvanized and cold galvanized by production technology. Hot-dip galvanized pipe is the mainstream choice for engineering applications.

2. Production Process

  • Hot-dip Galvanized (Mainstream)

  1. Pickling: Remove oxide scale and rust on the steel pipe surface.

  2. Cleaning: Neutralize and rinse with ammonium chloride / zinc chloride solution.

  3. Hot dipping: Soak the pipe in molten zinc liquid at about 450℃ to form a zinc-iron alloy layer plus a pure zinc layer with strong adhesion.

  4. Cooling, passivation, inspection and warehousing.

  • Cold Galvanized (Phased Out)Adopting electroplating technology with thin zinc layer (10–50 g/m²), poor adhesion and weak corrosion resistance. It is prohibited by national standards for water supply, drainage and gas pipelines.

3. Material & Executive Standards

  • Base material: High-quality low carbon steel Q195, Q215, Q235B, complying with GB/T 700.

  • Standard for galvanized pipe: GB/T 3091-2025 Welded Steel Pipe for Low-pressure Fluid Transportation.

  • Zinc coating requirement: Zinc coating weight of standard hot-dip galvanized pipe ≥ 275 g/m², reinforced pipe ≥ 400 g/m².

4. Common Specifications

Nominal diameter: DN15–DN200, standard fixed length: 6 meters per piece (customized length available).

Nominal Diameter Outer Diameter (mm) Wall Thickness (mm) Theoretical Weight (kg/m)
DN15 (1/2") 21.3 2.5–2.8 1.16–1.27
DN20 (3/4") 26.9 2.5–2.8 1.50–1.63
DN25 (1") 33.7 2.8–3.2 2.11–2.41
DN50 (2") 60.3 3.5–3.8 4.00–4.37
DN100 (4") 114.3 4.0–4.5 10.85–12.15
DN150 (6") 168.3 4.5–6.0 18.60–24.00

5. Core Performance

  1. Superior Corrosion Resistance: The zinc layer isolates water, oxygen and acid-base media, with service life over 20 years for outdoor and buried installation.

  2. Reliable Mechanical Property: Yield strength ≥ 235 MPa, tensile strength 370–500 MPa, suitable for low-pressure fluid transportation and structural support.

  3. Convenient Connection: Support threaded, grooved, welded and flange connection methods for high construction efficiency.

  4. Economical & Safe: Cost-effective compared with stainless steel; non-toxic zinc layer meets environmental protection standards.

6. Main Application

  • Fire protection system: Fire hydrant and sprinkler pipeline.

  • Building water supply & drainage: Domestic water, rainwater and sewage pipeline (excluding drinking water direct supply).

  • Gas transportation: Low-pressure pipeline for natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas.

  • Municipal engineering: Buried pipe network, road guardrail and lamp pole.

  • Industrial pipeline: Ventilation, dust removal, circulating cooling water and cable protection pipe.

  • Steel structure: Factory support, truss and greenhouse frame.

7. Hot-dip Galvanized VS Cold Galvanized

  • Hot-dip Galvanized: Thick coating (60–100 μm), uniform layer, strong adhesion, long service life, national standard recommended, slightly higher price.

  • Cold Galvanized: Thin coating (5–15 μm), easy to peel off, short service life, forbidden for water and gas pipeline, low price.

8. Installation & Maintenance

  1. Cutting: Use abrasive cutter or plasma cutter; polish the end and repair zinc coating in time to avoid rusting.

  2. Connection:Thread connection: Commonly used for DN≤50mm, processed thread after galvanizing with sealing tape.Grooved connection: Preferred for DN≥65mm, fast installation and good sealing performance.Welding: Use special welding wire; paint zinc-rich anti-corrosion paint after welding.

  3. Maintenance: Regular inspection to avoid scratch on zinc layer; apply special anti-corrosion paint for outdoor use to prolong service life.

9. Packaging & Delivery

  • Packaging: Plastic end caps at both ends, bundled in standard 6m length; labeled with specification, batch number and certificate.

  • Delivery Time: 5–7 days for regular specifications with sufficient stock.

10. Quality Assurance

  • All products comply with GB/T 3091-2025, providing material certificate, zinc coating test report and factory certificate.

  • Zinc layer uniformity: No red rust after 5 times copper sulfate immersion test.

  • Mechanical properties: Yield strength, tensile strength and elongation fully meet national standards.
